As someone who has worked with video game publishers as clients, I can confirm that the December Holiday season is one of the biggest bumps in revenue for the business. Adults go on holidays and vacations, kids and teens alike are off school, uni/college students are off exams. Leaves a lot of room for increased game sales and in-game spending, same with engagement. So yes, your theory on why the Game Awards are in early December is correct. One of the main reasons is so that the public can get gaming on their mind before holidays start, which is also why there's advertisements from hardware sponsors as well.
