Story Post: Vocational Shift

It's new story time! Thank you all for waiting! With Good Intentions 5 out, I haven't started up on the next book yet (almost certainly the next Poor Man's Fight). That left me wondering where to go for this month's story post, so I figured maybe I'd peruse through my files of unfinished ideas... and this one stood out. It's a light smutty fun adventure story, clearly the first chapter in something longer I'd like to write when I have the space for it. It feels more like a serialized slice-of-life-with-adventure-and-magic thing than a standalone book.

This story is modern magic and light sexy fantasy, and it's very much "exploratory writing" rather than a fully-outlined premise. It hits a bunch of familiar beats from Great Power and No Responsibilities and Grand Theft Sorcery. This story could probably fit right into Good Intentions, but I gave it some tweaks to make it a separate world so it would have its own space to breathe and be a little different. All that said, those similarities aren't an accident. With a lot of stories, I find myself making choices and then wondering where things would go if I went left instead of right. With me being me, often that "other path" feels pretty Literotica-ish. :)

I fussed over this title. "Vocational Shift" fits, although I had the snarky thought of, "I Got Thrown Out of College, So I Guess I'll Be a Wizard" ...and then realized that's not too far off from some actual titles out there. Probably not gonna go with that, but we'll see. I'm also not married to the protagonist's name (Tyler), but I wanted to provide our monthly story, so I decided to stick with it for now.

Please let me know what you think! Tanner's next book (and/or maybe Wandering Monsters) is my next priority, but if you want more of this story, I'll be really happy to provide!

OH, ALSO! If anyone here has me "followed" as an author on Amazon, could you let me know if/when you get an Amazon system notification about Good Intentions 5 being released? Those emails usually start up about a week after launch, but I never know when the Big A will change patterns or practices. It's always good to know what my readers are seeing.
