Funny I don't think there's anything cartoonishly evil about the Dursleys at all. They pretty much are smack dab in the middle of basic child neglect. It's not like Harry was beaten as far as we can tell but he was absolutely emotionally abused. Compared to some of the things I've actually witnessed in real life? The Dursleys are almost pedestrian. It's not your fault but I almost find it laughable you think they're cartoonish. They're run of the mill child abusers and fairly mild ones at that. Horrible people but hardly unrealistic.

I really liked this. As I said before I am sad about Harry and Dumbledore's rift and I would love a story where they (and maybe even the Dursleys) are on better footing. But the anger with which you write Harry in this and the pain he experiences are very believable. It makes for a gripping read. It might be weird for me to say, oh I wish someone would write the Dursleys as less than just antagonists, but I have always (even when I still liked the original Harry Potter books) disliked the cartoonishly evil and stupid way Rowling wrote the Dursleys. I get that they were supposed to be magic haters, and that they want to be 'normal' but it was all just so...silly. More believable would be them treating Harry with love and affection but hating the magic itself, like not seeing it as a mental illness but maybe as something that took family from them. Petunia could have hated the fact that the merely having magic basically took her sister from her for years, that there was something she could never understand about someone in her own family. And Vernon, someone who does care for his own family would have something he couldn't just scare into leaving them alone. It'd be very humbling.
