Buffy the Vampire Slayer || 3x19 || Full Reaction

Comments

Awww...I love that Willow decides to stay with Buffy and that they go for mochas. :o)

Sandy S.

There's a gif of Giles getting the pages that someone posted somewhere with the caption that this is how they felt when they got out of quarantine. And haha, that's how I felt when I found out I could get the COVID vaccine before Christmas... :o) This episode is so good! Loving the reactions...

Sandy S.

"couples that slay together, stay together" well... well we got a few seasons left.

Leonard Ledung

Only Oz could have one of the BEST lines in the series, without saying anything.

John Kress

Ok reason why I was waiting for this episode was because of the scene when they are all arguing and Oz just calmly gets up and throws what they needed to destroy the box across the room. Favourite Oz scene EVER. I love it and love seeing people's reactions to it.

Josie Ball

I'm now 37 and I've been mirroring Alley's dabs since season 1, welcome to the weird team!

Superfan Giovanni

There are so many things to love about this episode. It's wonderful. The mayor gave the advice he did when he did for two reasons, as I see it. One, he knows that together, Angel and Buffy are stronger, and stand a better chance of defeating him, whereas apart, they are weaker. Two, he was trying to shake Buffy, because worrying about her and Angel means she's less focused. Distraction makes her weaker, and therefore less likely to beat him. His ascension is close at hand at this point, so this might have been his last opportunity to stick the knife in, as it were. Yes, Snyder knew about the mayor, but he didn't know all of it. He knows he's evil and he's up to something, but he doesn't know what his plans are or what he is. I think he was a plant, given the job as principle so he could help control and manipulate the situation (the cop said "I was told you could handle this job," and people have made references to him keeping things under control, ie, School Hard in season 2), but he isn't in on all of it. It's need to know. Loved watching stoic, cool as a cucumber Oz lose his cool over Willow. That's the first time we see him flip out, and it's awesome. I know a lot of people thought Willow staying behind to read those books was weird, but to me, it sort of made sense. She saw an opportunity, maybe the only opportunity, to get what they needed to stop the mayor from those books. Great reaction as always.

Raven Dark

The Willow and the books thing, I think as someone developing a fascination with magic she just becomes kinda engrossed in the books. Our Will definitely would normally show the smarts to grab a book or two and get out of there! I love how the Mayor (despite being a power hungry villain) still has a caring side, he talks with fondness about a woman he stayed with till she died of old age and I think he's shown he genuine cares about Faith by this point.

Neil Carleton

Now I'm sad that I didn't get the Mission Impossible link. I miss out on all the fun.

Kirby

It can be either, there are other hellmouths.

Alexis Cardarella

Willow is by a mile MVP in this episode, Also the Faith and Mayor interactions and of course the Roasting of Bangel. Nice Reaction as always Keep up the good work. :)

Isac christensen

Haha I always notice that too. It's THE Hellmouth, not just Hellmouth.

OliveJus

I agree with this post soo much. The Mayor has always been my favorite Big Bad on BTVS. Harry Groener is a joy to watch in his role as the Mayor.

Kirby

I've had the best day ever. Still, this upload is much appreciated. Hope your day gets better, Megan. Random thought, how do people do emojis here?

Kirby

Definitely a table setting episode, but as far as table setting episodes go: pretty well done!

Blain H Granado

Also of course Joss Whedon was involved with multiple Marvel movies and would bring on his peeps.

Kenny Teeology

Also, I found myself doing the dab choreography along with you in the credits. I am 31 years old, that is NOT okay!

Jamie Morgan

I agree with you on Willow staying in the Mayor's office instead of grabbing a book and running, or at least hiding! The only thing I can say to justify it is that Willow has a history of being a bit reckless in the face of stress, and her quest for knowledge has been well established by now, so I guess getting distracted by interesting books isn't entirely out of character. But only moments before that, she had the wherewithal to stake a vamp with a floating pencil, so...I dunno. Bit of a poor writing decision, in my opinion. And I can't help but feel a little sorry for Faith about that knife. Yet another thing that "should" have been hers that Buffy now has! Then again, Faith definitely shouldn't be trusted with a knife haha.

Jamie Morgan

With regards to Willow not leaving... she tried a door that was locked. Since she read the plans, she would've known about any other ways in and out of the building. I'm guessing the villains thought far enough ahead that they made sure she couldn't get out of the building. So the second-best plan was to snatch those pages and otherwise read as much as she could before she was caught.

Daniel

Yeah, to me it always read like Snyder thought he was way more in-the-know than he actually was. He definitely has that kind of a complex!

Jamie Morgan

He knew that the Mayor wanted Buffy out. That she was a thorn in his side. The details he didn't know. The mayor tells him he wants something, he doesn't ask the reason, and he certainly doesn't get filled in on the details.

Loves Bitca

That scene between Buffy and Willow is the emotional core of this show. This moment, when Willow makes it clear that she shares the same values as Buffy and stands beside Buffy, is when they they form a very powerful friendship that will shape their lives and the world. I can't stand how beautiful it is....

Briony Addey

Alley, thank you very much for making this mistake. It was a very entertaining surprise. (Also, I added the MI video to my "Remix" playlist.) :)

UTU49

Best. Rickroll. Ever.

UTU49

The mayor's an interesting character & it seems pretty clear that he's got a great ability to compartmentalise; yes he's got his evil plot, but at the same time he sees no reason not to care about his responsibilities as a mayor, be perfectly willing to give good advice & be civil in general, which is why he gave genuinely good advice to Buffy & Angel, and any undermining of their confidence ahead is a handy side benefit. Willow staying behind seems like it was a deliberate calculated risk as it'd be unlikely she'd get the change to get that info again so she decided to find out what she could & trust her friends to come through for her, hence making a point of grabbing those pages of the most interesting stuff then any other reading was to get more context & info.

Stewart Denew

Scott Hope was his name an, no, it wasn’t last but this season. It was a doomed relationship from the jump.

Brandon Scott

Snyder made mention of the mayor when he expelled Buffy, so at that point I think they wrote it as if they knew, and getting rid of her was going to help.... something? Maybe they planned to make Snyder evil? Then I think maybe when they wrote in the Mayor plot heavy they just kind of abandoned that and went back to Snyder being a clueless dick.

Dusty

Hahaha, I was thinking the same thing!

Brandon Scott

Feel free to drop the next episode anytime. If you’re bored and have time. No pressure.

Rob

watching you try and predict season 4 when season 3 isn't even over was hilarious.

Vincent Valentin

Yeah... Wesley's not wrong, strategically speaking. The choice is hard. But it comes down to whether or not to trade lives... maybe they could rescue her and then get the box or something else at a later point? But in terms of what they traded, and the chance that they'd never be able to make up for the loss is high.

FernWithy

Armin Shimerman who plays Snider was also filming his main role as 'Quark' in Star Trek : Deep Space Nine around this time as that show was coming to an end. That's why it's been a while since we've seen him.

Daniel Stimson

When Faith was just walking the box in the front door all I could hear was: “Don’t be suspicious, don’t be suspicious.”

Shashank

Alley I love your videos love your takes on the show, but I gotta say it. It's 'The Hellmouth' a hellmouth is a mystical convergence and not a proper noun (sorry)

Adthay

Willow apparently wants to save people and hunt things?

Paul Maki

I always thought the last scene reminded me of the end scene of the movie The Graduate.

Kitty

There was a ton of setup for Willow staking the vampire. In E6 it was established that a pencil would work (Buffy used one to slay a vampire while studying for SATs with Giles) and in E16 it was established that Willow could project a pencil with force when she embedded one in a tree. In between there were a couple of references to "floating pencils" at the bad guys (in the context of that being presumed ineffective) - E8 and E11 I think. It was one of the things I did manage to predict when I first watched Buffy!

Dan

I'm guessing Alley must be using that in the edited reaction for the break-in scenes...

Dan

Yeah I think its a need to know basis with Snyder. We know that he knows that Sunnydale is on a Hellmouth and that the Mayor wants Buffy out of the way. But I doubt he knows that the Mayor is an immortal, invincible being set on destroying Sunnydale or that Buffy is a supernatural human with special powers.

Jon Dub

Wait. Alley..... we're not the realest anymore? I sad.

Tim Pierce

we be needin' Alley time here..

Ashtara Levin

I was confused about Snyder at first too, but if you go back to the episode, you can see he's not at all surprised by the presence of Vampires or even the existence of Demons, only that the Mayor is immortal and that Buffy is somehow in on it.. I think it's a classic case of "being on the take but not seeing the big picture" ( - in parentheses 'cause as fas as we know, he's not in working for the Mayor, just has runins with his on account of his job.. ) Xander teases Cordelia when he runs into her at the store earlier "Daddy's money helped with getting you into all those great collages" - and it is established in earlier seasons that she has a fancy car from her dad, basically she's supposed to be filthy rich and have no reason to work at a department store, ogling a dress. it's not that "hey, a teenager has a job" - it's that CORDELIA - princess, queen of attention who's obsessed with her public persona has a job,and is letting someone treat her as that manager treated her at the end of the episode that at least for me. Might also explain why she's all thorns. And last point - can we stop to appreciate this show for making you go from seeing Snyder for the first time, and be all "God what a pain in the ass" to "oh don't kill Snyder!" or Wesley from "Yep, he's going to die in one episode" to seriously wonder about his future as a series regular..

Ashtara Levin

I love this season. 😎😎😎😎 Great episodes...back to back to back. Going to watch the reaction now.

Allan Cornett

That Mission Impossible link made me piss myself. wondered WTF was going on!!

Jon Dub

All we know about Cordelia is that she's a popular, rich, mean girl whose dad has money so she feels she doesn't have to work and can do whatever she wants. Then we get this episode and suddenly she's working so now we're left confused and wondering why. I think as far as the Angel/Buffy situation, the Mayor is reminded of what happened to him and his wife so it just brought back memories and I guess he felt like bringing it up.

Koh_Kae

lmao you are not sorry

Rachel Espiritu

One of the reasons I love the Mayor as a villain is that he is still solidly a human man, with very human and (I believe) genuine feelings and thoughts. I think his speech about Angel and Buffy was obviously manipulative and self-indulgent, but also pretty insightful. Like everyone I’m sure, I am so looking forward to Alley’s reactions to the final two (or 3) episodes that close out Season 3.

Andrew Pulrang

My personal take on Snyder is that he's middle management. The Mayor tells him what he needs to know, and nothing more. He knows Sunnydale is on a hellmouth, and he has to keep that under wraps. And he knows that the Mayor wanted Buffy out of the way, but he doesn't know why.

matt

This episode did exactly what it needed to do which was further the season story along.

Keenan White

This is a great episode for Willow. Destroying the barrier around the box, killing the vampire, standing up to faith, getting those pages, and figuring out that she wants to help fight. More than balances out the getting captured.

zerofk

I agree with both Wesley and the mayor in this episode. Buffy had literally no plan, she rallied her peeps around a rushed and risky idea. Confronting an invincible being without any deeper thought behind it just seems unnecessarily dangerous. All Wesley wanted her to do is to stop for a second before going into a situation blindly. But nobody ever listens to him ofc She was doing the same thing with Giles back when he was the watcher. As for the mayor - Buffy clearly never seen Highlander if she's still so naive about a relationship with an immortal ;)

DB

Being a Spock fan, I've always believed, "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few or the one" adage...so I actually agreed with Wesley on this one. Call me a monster if you will, but that's just my take.

aeronitz

I personally loved how Willow started to read the books. She originally was the "nose in a book" kinda girl from the beginning, wasn't she, so it was kind of like her automatic comfort move. And us viewers – we get tense, because we can _feel_ that she's gonna be found there reading. I really liked how they played with our heartrates there. :)

Patrick Armbruster

Just wanted to say that Christophe Beck (Buffy's Composer) did do the scores for both the Ant-Man movies, so that might be why it sounds so much like a Marvel Movie.

Cole Crouse

Thanks for the upload and great reaction! I just subscribed to you a week ago and have been marathoning through your Buffy reactions. Getting really excited for you to get to the finally and also start season 4--some of my favorite episodes are in that season! A couple notes regarding comments you had. I think you don't quite realize just how whimsical the Mayor is as a character. He genuinely cares about Faith. And his advice to Angel and Buffy was also pretty sincere; it was basically a "I'm gonna kill you guys, but until then, I still want to offer some sage fatherly advice" kinda thing. Also, just a reminder--Snyder knows that Sunnydale's on a Hellmouth, but he doesn't seem to know specifics about Buffy except that she's involved in stuff; he's just a neurotic, stick-up-his-ass type of guy that was sent to maintain order at the school, so basically an impossible task. And you'll learn more about the Cordy situation soon, so mum's the word!

loopkill

Preeeeeetty sure Alley copied the YT URL for the edited version for exactly that scene. ;)

Patrick Armbruster

The new Rick Roll 😂😂

David Ingracia III

I shrieked when Allie said the thing about the music sounding like it's from a Marvel movie because guess what? The score was by Christophe Beck who DID go on to score the Ant-Man movies.

Madam Satsuma

I forgot about that scene between Xander and Oz where they take a beat to appreciate how great Willow is.

Superfan Giovanni

I love the formation of the paternal bond between Wilkins and Faith. He is probably my favorite "Buffy" villain - so fully drawn and human but still broad and arch when called for. But the little aside about losing his wife to old age as his immortal deal took hold humanizes him, it explains why he'd attach to Faith that way (and I love that the established very early on that this isn't prurient on his part, when he rebukes Faith for referring to him as 'sugar daddy').

Dan H

I love the confrontation between Willow and Faith this episode. So far Faith has been let off the hook a lot by Buffy, Angel, Giles and even Xander. Willow genuinely disliking her gives a chance for her to come into a confrontation that makes her hear some hard truths. This is due to the fact Willow doesn't care enough about her well being in the first place to try and save her from the dark side. Faith: "You hurt me, I hurt you. I'm just a little more efficient.".

Valkyrie

Thanks mine worked properly after a couple of refreshes.

Collinson

wait.... should work NOW...

Alley Box

You fixed the text, but clicking still goes to YouTube. (Luckily we can copy and paste the OneHub info.)

Superplin

I thought the song was part of the opening for a second there, because there IS kind of a mission impossible-esque heist in this episode haha. Also, FYI the physical link still takes you to youtube, but you can copy it to get to onehub

loopkill

Haha I was sure this was some Zoomer version of Rickrolling XD

Tobijah

again, plz, still MI for me LoL

Damon Pearcy

Oh yeah I'm getting the same. Maybe it's a clue that the episode is impossible to edit lol.

Collinson

Ha!

Superplin

Blimey people react fast around here! Sheesh!

Bonbon

Could have been Rick Astley!
