Vacation Poll

For a while now I've been finding working on stuff to be a bit of a slog. The start of it was probably coming to terms with At the Mountains of Friendship being a bit of a flop. That was very hard to do with how much I had invested in that game both emotionally and financially. But it's been over a month and I'm still finding it hard to work on things really. I still want to make games, even if I wasn't running Apollo Seven I'd make stuff for fun. But the current slate just doesn't feel enjoyable to me right now.

So I'm going to take a vacation. I've taken trips and such while working doing Apollo Seven Games but I usually work on the games during them. For example on that cruise I mentioned taking last month I still had my laptop and was working on games every day, getting things ready for the Netoria Steam release and such. But I think I need to take a full break. Don't even think about game stuff for a while. This will take place for most of May, I already had a trip planned but instead of doing my usual work on the games at night thing I might not even bring my laptop to force myself to just relax and such.

The problem with that is that I have this Patreon where people pay me every month for my work. That's a lot of pressure to deliver content regularly, I don't want to be ripping people off. Honestly charging people for my stuff at all is something that I only really do begrudgingly. It's a necessary evil to be able to make the game better with nice art. If I'm not working on things, you shouldn't be paying, right? That's my feeling at least but since you're the people who are supporting me I'll ask you up front.

Should I pause the Patreon for May while I'm on vacation? Either way, I'll be back for June hopefully much more energized and motivated.

No. No. No. To think that we Patreon supporters are paying the creator to work is stupid. We are supporting them, so that they can better focus on what we would want them to do. We act as PATREONS not FINANCIERS. Supporters are not collectively commissioning a Creator to do specific thing(s), but they enable him to focus on said thing(s). If we would pay them, then we would need to gain something equivalent to the ammount of money we invested, but from this point of view every single creator on Patreon is a rip-off, because the monetary value of the end product and Tier-goodies is not equivalent to the summ one has invested in it over the course of it´s development time. Do I fee lriped-off? NO! Because I don´t imagine myself "paying him to", but rather "support him for" continuing his work.

I think it comes down to what you feel is right. Hell, it might even make your vacation feel better because you won't have to worry about us at all. That said, I don't have any issue throwing ten dollars at you while you take a needed vacation.

I definitely get pausing the Patreon, since the idea is essentially that we're paying you to work and if absolutely no work is getting done then why collect a paycheck. But despite that, I think there's a real grey area when it comes to a patreon like this where we're paying you to develop a product that will take time to realize, rather than specifically paying for monthly benefits. I'd say that so long as it's a rare thing with prior notice there's no shame in collecting the money from people who want to support you.
