SeaBed, and the Permanency of Grief (and Lesbians) (Patreon Cut)

A Dropbox repository with a downloadable copy can be found here!

Queer yearning, lesbians, and grief -- it could be no visual novel other than 2015's SeaBed, a brilliant yuri story that left me questioning how we interpret stories, and what it means to accept life may never give us the catharsis we desire.

I would very much appreciate a video on the PS2 version of Flower, Sun, and Rain. I played through the DS version while working through the early Kill the Past games and would love to hear your opinions on it.

Aaagh. I can't believe it took me three videos to notice that I put the wrong name on my patreon account. I guess, more specifically, I had forgotten to change it since I changed my name. That's embarrassing, even more so since it took until the youtube upload for me to bother checking for my name. ;-;

I was a little worried that I wasn't really getting my thoughts across there and really didn't wanna come off as "um actually" in regards to "the proper way to interpret media" so I'm glad it came across :3

Tyler (TJ) Murphy

Exactly :D

I totally agree with you on pretty much all of that, and am considering maaaybe going back and adding a sentence or two to at least touch on these things better. Because authorial intent absolutely matters, just how much is dependent on context - but it's never a nonfactor and should never be ignored. Just not treated as the end-all-be-all with no room for thinking afterwards.

Thank you! And yeah, that's how I understand it; there's really good thematic as well as player reasons for it, and I don't think those would work as well were there any VA.

Noelle Aman

Fixed -- thank you!

Also, excited to see you tackle Flower Sun and Rain :D I don't see that one talked about much at all

Regarding your quick little aside with media analysis at around the 18 minute mark. I think I mostly agree with your opinion about authorial intent and how a reader's interpretation/transformation of themes and narrative can be just as important, but I don't really think you can ever really fully put the author's intent down when trying to interpret story elements. (I don't think that's what you meant but I'm gonna ramble continue anyways lol ^^;) Your example with Cthulhu (the movie) I think pairs with this pretty well because Lovecraft was notorious for how he handled the idea of minorities in his stories. He didn't like them, to be super quick about that. But I think the Cthulhu movie kind of rolls with that, understanding this sense of hatred of the other in Lovecraft's fiction and narrows in on it as both a critique of how nasty it is and an exploration of how awful it can feel to BE that other that Lovecraft hates so much. In regards to the morality stuff, I think that that has definitely gotten away from people a lot lately (I blame the Rowling discourse for the modern version of this, but that's a whole can of worms) and has kind of changed how people handle authorial intent a lot of the time. It ends up being used a lot to just straight up shoot down any arguments about the story and oftentimes turns into "author bad, therefore story bad" ignoring that sometimes a bigot can write a story surprisingly relatable to the people they were trying to knock down (again, Lovecraft stories being enjoyed by queer people and POC alike). I just think it's worth keeping in mind that the author (in this example) probably didn't intend for it to be interpreted that way and how interesting it is that sometimes an author's work can just get away from them (this goes the other way too, sometimes it's really interesting to go into how someone intended to make an inclusive story but accidentally falls into bigoted ideas based on their own cultural understandings). Anyways, I thiiiink I agree with your points about interpreting stories and I definitely rambled a bit, but I wanted to add in my two cents about the whole "death of the author" stuff. I hope it made sense haha. (I've reread this like 10 times because I don't want to come off as combative at all) Love your videos btw, your stuff is part of the reason I've been really getting back into visual novels lately and I'm just now starting ep 4 of Umineko and loving every minute of it, I've also been (slowly) trying to learn Japanese so I can dig into a lot of the VN's that never made it overseas :D

its a banger as always!! I always took the lack of voice acting as an intentional thing in terms of how it is presented, not just for budget reasons. Often times in the flow state of reading, the lack of "xyz said" markers (at least in english) made me have to make sure i was paying full attention so I know who is talking when. it also adds to the bits where hallucinated takako and sanae are getting jumbled in sachikos head. the HD version also has some sound novels that (albeit very expensive) are wonderfully performed and very worth it if you love the hell out of the main two

Thank you for the beautiful video!
