The Creepypasta Visual Novel That Time Forgot (Patreon Cut)

Long before DDLC and other meta-horror VNs, there was a little game in 2004 that explored the harms of fiction, how roles are forced onto us, generational trauma and more, all with some haunting creepypasta vibes...

...that game, is Suisenka.

I wanted to just say, something about you, writing and recording about these VNs have an aspect of archiving media so it does not get lost to time. The mention of how only a few people have played or played through Suisenka, reminded me of that and I appreciate/admire about you. Thank you.

REC-L

I finally got around to watching this and first of all I wanna say: your writing is always so stunning and with every video it seems to get a little better. It's the mixture of well chosen words and the smooth flow at which you manage to deliver them that makes them all in conjuncture become more than their parts. This video in particular hit home like a sack of bricks launching into my chest. I was very much raised as a boy and to be a man, but as I got older I discovered my asexuality and eventually rejected gender, choosing to wear the label agender. Everything about Kouichi before choosing to face his life so painfully reminded me of myself when i was consumed by darker thoughts. That dejectedness, those mannerisms and those thoughts felt like looking at an old photograph. This is all the more meaningful to me since he did in the end choose to leave behind that which restricted him and to face the world in all its beauty and in all its violence. It's funny, before watching this video i never really realized, but I *did* always resonate with these more distant and empty seeming "blank-slate" protagonists at least a little bit. Thank you for making this video, I've never once thought twice about supporting your work here on patreon and I appreciate everything you're doing again and again everytime I watch one of your videos. I hope you have a great day :) (P.S.: i didn't know patreon sended comments instantly when pressing enter, so i had to delete that other message haha)

A clarification to my question. When I said machine translation I include what lay people call AI translation as part of the definition. While newer methods have improved accuracy, at the end of the day a machine is still doing the work. I've personally used machine translation to patch untranslated sections of work instructions; however, I always asked for help on the longer untranslated sections,

holy shit this kinda has the same ending as utena

Whenever I play DOD1, I put on ultra-cute denpa music and grind through the land segments repeatedly, totally zoning out. It's hypnotic, just as you said. The repetition makes my eyes glaze over and my brain short out, even as Leonard begs me to stop slaughtering all those children lol. But it's just another body, completely separate from my existence, and theres a perverse fascination with watching all the characters getting pushed to the absolute extreme. I know that sounds like I'm a crazy person, but since its a story, there urge to complete and see everything overrides the empathetic twinge that it doesn't have to be this way. My wish to explore every possibility and piece things together destroys the lives of those I'm playing with. On a completely different note, there's a quote from a book I read sometime ago: "One reason that traumatic memories become dominant in PTSD is that it's so difficult to feel truly alive right now. When you can't be fully here, you go to the places where you did feel truly alive-- even if those places are filled with horror and misery." The video was amazing and made tear up at the end. To kill the past and continue on as yourself is so difficult, but its necessary for reclaiming yourself. Humans are always changing. So we can change, too.

Thank you for another great video and happy holidays and new year Noelle! I actually played Sanzen Sekai Yuugi couple years back and loved Tomoe (the mc). I was surprised to see otome heroine being more assertive and not so naïve/innocent (not that there's anything wrong with sweet and innocent heroines, but sometimes I just want to see them go crazy and murder people and not always turn the other cheek when confronted with being done wrong lol). I don't think it had particularly good plot or interesting/deep characters, but I thought it was worth playing just bc how fun Tomoe is lol. But I'm nowhere near as analytical as you are in terms of looking for deeper themes/meanings in games so you might appreciate the game more than I did if you ever decide to play the game. ^^

"Kill the past"... I love themes like that. Big reason why the work of Suda51 resonates with me so much. Fantastic video <3

i was so looking forward to hearing your thoughts ont suisenka and after this im even more hyped to get to actually reading it myself. the aesthetics and ost for the vn is just off the charts. thanks for sharing, im glad i got to watch this today

Nadia Nova

This feels a bit like The Truman Show in VN form(but a good bit more risque)-a world meant to be an ideal, with all playing their parts slowly shattering over time as the "protagonist" starts tearing at the seams until they are able to break free. Honestly, with all the games that tap against the fourth wall in the modern day due to games like Undertale hitting it big, a translation of this game might be pretty popular, but alas. (Also, your outfits look cute, keep showing off your style, girl!) Also, Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays, all.

The Critic of Innocence

Umineko was such a dumpster fire at the end but I still get so much joy when people reference it (and the OSTs will forever slap).
