Mid video update and Q&A (September edition)

Konyanyachiwa! This months update is finally just about on time, despite everything that's happened since the Jisatsu video went live. And by that, I mean my old MacBook Pro, a 2019 model, managed to somehow cook itself to death. It was already on the fritz but I was really hoping I'd be able to push it for a long while.

Alas, that thing is toast and gone, and in its place I have a 2018 model very very generously donated by a viewer, friend, and patron, and soon enough I'll have a gaming PC built, funded by selling off some music equipment I haven't used in a long while.

This will hopefully be a positive for the channel, as my last MacBook was struggling to run even simpler VNs under Windows. This made video capture an absolute headache sometimes. I was also struggling a lot for storage since my internal 512GB SSD was split between Windows and Mac -- this rig will have its own 1TB SSD, and this MacBook also has a 1TB SSD, so I won't have to constantly be deleting old footage only to find I actually needed that footage two videos down the line. Yay!

Also, I should note this did not affect video production *too bad* - I was able to use my roommates old laptop to capture footage for this upcoming video and continue my Rance 03 playthrough, and my video work is ALWAYS done from an external drive. I was pretty demoralized and sad for a bit, but things are good now, if not better than before.

Onto the updates!

Fushigi Densha: One of my Patrons, Victoria Vela, asked if I'd be doing more denpa games. Wish fulfilled! The next video is going to be all about this unhinged and utterly bizarre game that falls into that category - unlike Jisatsu though, this one isn't a horror game. It's just... really goddamn weird. Script is about half way done.

Rance & AliceSoft series: Same as before. I'm making a much more concerted push to get through 03 on my days off, so hopefully this will change soon and I can start work on the Toushin Toshi videos.

Weird 3DO shit: I got the 3DO, I am SUPER happy to own a 3DO, unfortunately said 3DO did not like reading burned discs and either because of my fault or just Tech Being Old, it's having trouble reading discs at all now. Plan is to drop in an ODE once a certain Patreon goal is met, or I reach $250 purely in Ko-Fi donations. THEN I can make this video.

Other projects: YU-NO will likely be pushed back until next year. PC-98 Magical Girl stuff is still planned for some time. I may start peering back into the world of Elf and other games in November with Isaku. Other than this, please leave me suggestions for short (sub-20 hour) VNs before 2003! Speaking of...

What About Newer Games & Sorta VNs?

This is something I've been thinking about for a bit and want some viewer feedback on how to handle. My plan is that starting next year, maybe after the YU-NO video as that does sort of branch the gap between 90s VNs and the modern route based structure, I'll start being open to looking at newer titles. I have a couple in mind I really want to take a look at. I also really want to start looking into games that, while not VNs, are narratively focused in a similar way to them; specifically, I want to look at RPG Maker games.

Would you all be interested in this? There's a lot of games I hear are fantastic (King Exit, Demons Roots, Azusa 999) that I would love to take a look at, and I think you all would enjoy too.

As always, thank you so much for the support and continuing to help me and my channel out with kind comments and donations! If you have any questions you want in this videos Q&A segment, then please leave them here and I'll answer what I can. (´。• ω •。`)

I'm excited for what's coming. I played through the begining of Fushigi Dansha last year but never got around to finish it. I'm interested in hearing your thoughts on it. As far as games I'd be interested in seeing you covering. I always thought it would be neat to shine a bit of a spotlight on Liar-soft titles. Their catalog is filled with interesting little project, from the cult classics like Kusarihime (which is finally getting a fan tl) and Forest to more obscure titles like Angel Bullet or SEVEN-BRIDGE. And that's not even counting their more recent efforts. So yeah, I it would be neat to see one of there covered on your show. They're pretty cool. Loving your content so far, keep up the good work and good luck with your new pc rig.

Looking forward to what's coming up and hope your computer woes remain few Joining the club of buying a powerful desktop setup just to play VN's is the wave.

France

We hope you have a very working laptop now! Glad it seems like you can get the video done as normal.

Mewyabby

Definitely looking forward to any content you enjoy making, whether that's older VNs or newer ones. In particular though, I really love your videos on games I personally might not ever get to play, particularly if they're language-locked or hard to emulate.

I also have a not-that-old macbook pro on it's last legs, you'd think they'd build them to last a bit longer... And yeah, I'd love to hear about RPGmaker and modern games! or anything really!

Scarlett

I'm a sucker for RPGMaker so I definitely welcome this

Are you planning on covering any of Gen Urobuchi's VNs at any point? I know you already have a pretty large backlog of stuff you want to cover, but I would be really interested in hearing your thoughts and opinions on Saya No Uta in particular. Saya No Uta was the game that really got me back into VNs last year, and it inspired me to read a lot of stuff that I wouldn't have otherwise. Anywho, keep up the great work, your videos are always a treat to watch!

Samuel Brooks

You put a lot of amazing work into writing your videos and I'd love to hear that same writing for anything you feel it can be done for. I've barely explored modern VNs and never RPGMaker, I'd be interested in both, so I say the more cool content the better!
