Leo’s terrified whisper still hung in the air when the silence shattered.
“What the ACTUAL fuck?!”
Sophie’s voice cracked through the room like lightning, the kind that sets trees on fire and splits the sky in half. Her eyes were wild, her messy hair haloed by the dim glow of the nightstand lamp she must’ve turned on while we were lost in each other. She looked like she’d just walked in on a murder.
And maybe she had.
I scrambled to pull the duvet up over Leo, but it was useless. The room reeked of sex. Sweat. Musk. Guilt. Leo instinctively tried to sit up, wincing as he did — my body still half on top of his, still inside him.
“Sophie—wait—” I started, my voice hoarse.
“Don’t fucking say my name!” she screamed, voice cracking under the weight of betrayal. “I trusted you. I loved you. And you—” Her finger stabbed the air toward me, then toward Leo. “You disgusting, lying pieces of shit.”
Leo looked like he wanted to melt into the floor. He sat up and started to speak, but Sophie cut him off.
“No. Don’t even start, Leo. I’m so fucking tired of you slithering around like a harmless little sidekick. Like you’re innocent. You’ve been all over him for months. I saw it. I fucking saw it!”
“I never meant—” Leo began.
She stepped forward, jabbing a finger at both of us. “You didn’t mean to fuck him? While I was two feet away?! Huh? Didn’t mean to steal the one goddamn thing I thought was mine?!”
“I’m sorry,” Leo whispered. His voice was wrecked.
I sat up, still stunned, my chest heaving with guilt and disbelief. “Sophie, I—”
Her eyes snapped to mine. “And you. I could’ve handled it if you fell out of love. People do. But this? You lied to me. You humiliated me. In our fucking bed.”
I opened my mouth, but no words came.
“I hope it was worth it,” she spat.
She turned away, crossing to the closet and yanking out her overnight bag, tossing things into it with shaking hands. Her breathing was ragged now — not just angry but panicked. Hurt. Leo moved to stand, reaching for his briefs, but she rounded on him again.
“Don’t. Touch. Me.”
Then, suddenly, she stopped.
Bag in hand, fists clenched at her sides, she stared at the floor and took one shaky breath.
“I wasn’t even going to tell you this yet.” Her voice dropped to a cold whisper. “But since you clearly don't deserve the dignity of subtlety...”
She looked up, eyes rimmed with tears but burning with rage.
“I’m pregnant.”
The world froze.
My jaw went slack. Leo’s eyes widened in horror. The weight of that sentence hit me like a gut punch, knocking every molecule of breath from my lungs.
“I’m carrying your child,” she hissed. “And you were too busy fucking my best friend to notice anything was different.”
She turned, slamming the bag shut. “I already called a cab. I’m leaving tonight.”
“Soph, please—” I started, stepping forward instinctively.
“Don’t. You don’t get to beg. You don’t get to fix this.”
Her voice cracked. She turned one last time, tears now freely falling. “I loved you. I chose you. And now I have to raise a child knowing his father fucked someone else while I was in the same fucking room.”
The sound of her footsteps was deafening as she stormed out. The front door slammed shut a few seconds later.
Then… silence.
Just the sound of my breath shaking in my throat and Leo sitting behind me, stunned, the duvet barely covering him.
I didn’t look at him. I couldn’t.
He finally spoke. “Adrian…”
His voice was soft. Careful.
“I didn’t know,” he whispered. “If I’d known—”
“Stop,” I said flatly. My voice sounded like someone else’s.
He crawled closer. “Let me help. Let me just—”
“Don’t,” I cut in, standing up. “Just… don’t.”
He stood too, guilt etched across his face, hair messy, cheeks flushed with shame. “I never wanted to hurt her. I swear. I—”
“Leo.”
He froze.
I turned to look at him, finally. My voice cracked as I said it:
“Maybe it’s best if you just leave.”
He swallowed, eyes glassy. “Adrian, don’t shut me out. Not now.”
I shook my head. “I can’t even think straight right now. I have to... I need to figure out what the hell I’ve just done. What kind of man I’ve become.”
Leo’s face crumpled. He nodded once, like it hurt. “Okay. I’ll go.”
He stepped toward the door, then stopped. Turned back.
“I’m sorry,” he said again, voice barely audible. “For everything.”
And then he left.
And for the first time in a long time, I was truly alone.

I didn’t even catch that — I was too shocked about being caught. And sorry, but that wasn’t just irresponsible… that was worse than what they did! OK, you don’t have to say it, I will: WTF — drinking while pregnant?! Total judgment. And don’t even get me started — heavy drinking during pregnancy can seriously mess up a baby’s development. We’re talking long-term health issues, birth defects, learning problems… the whole thing is dangerous and reckless.
