I stepped back inside, the warmth of the house instantly wrapping around me, but I barely had a second to adjust before I spotted a face so similar to mine. Casey—my twin and my bane—already dressed in his suit, leaned casually against the wall, grinning in that annoyingly smug way of his.
“Jay, you look flustered,” he said, his tone dripping with fake innocence.
I groaned inwardly, already bracing for the next jab.
“Been in the shed with your boyfriend again?” he continued, his grin widening.
“Shut up! He is definitely NOT my boyfriend!” I shot back, my voice sharper than I intended.
“Whatever, bro.” He shrugged, his eyes flicking down to my pants before pointing. “But go clean up and maybe change clothes. There’s an obvious stain.”
“Is not!” I retorted instinctively, but when I glanced down, my stomach dropped. There it was—a very obvious cum stain on my trousers. I slapped my hand over it, my face burning. “Fuck… I was gonna change anyway. And you should stop selling weed. Mom would freak, and Gran would murder you. She’ll be here soon.”
“Yeah, Mrs. Braun will indeed be here soon, and what would she say if she saw that semen stain?” Casey quipped, his tone mocking. “Besides, your boyfriend is my best customer.”
“He’s not—that’s not—he isn’t—dammit!” I stammered, my words tangling as I tried to form a coherent response. His smirk only grew, and I felt my frustration boiling over. I choked up, threw him my best glare, and bolted up the stairs, my face blazing and my heart pounding.
“Fuck you, Casey!” I shouted over my shoulder, but his laugh followed me up the stairs, infuriatingly smug and victorious.
---
I slammed the door to my room shut behind me, leaning back against it as I tried to steady my breathing. My heart was pounding, not just from running up the stairs but from the sheer humiliation. I glanced down at the literally incriminating DNA stain again—fuck, it was so obvious. How had I missed it? And of course, Casey, with his eagle eyes and never-ending supply of smug remarks, had to point it out.
“Fucking Casey,” I muttered, peeling off my sweater and tossing it onto the bed. I stared at my reflection in the mirror, my cheeks still flushed, my hair slightly mussed from the rush outside. I looked every bit as flustered as Casey had smugly pointed out. At least I had my own room now. Before our older brother moved away to college, we had to share—almost killing each other in the process.
My hands fumbled with the buttons on my shirt as I tried to replay the conversation in my head. "Boyfriend," he’d called Justin. Justin, my boyfriend. I snorted to myself. As if. He didn’t even count. It wasn’t like there was anything romantic about what we had. It was just… mutual convenience. A quick release.
But Casey’s words stuck, looping in my head. “Your ‘boyfriend’ is my best customer.” The nerve of him! If Mom knew, she’d flip. If Gran knew—well, we’d probably all be buried six feet under by now.
I yanked my trousers off and threw them into the corner, scrubbing at the spot on my thigh where the stain had been. The memory of Justin’s smirk flashed in my mind, and my cheeks burned hotter. God, he was such a cocky asshole sometimes. But so was Casey. It was like I was surrounded by smug idiots today.
Grabbing my suit from the dresser, I forced myself to breathe. I needed to calm down before heading back downstairs. Gran would be arriving soon, and I couldn’t give her—or anyone else—any reason to ask questions. Not that Casey needed more ammunition, anyway. He’d already gotten enough mileage out of one stain.
I straightened my shirt, ran a hand through my hair, and stared at myself in the mirror again. My reflection looked calm now—composed. But I could still feel the heat under my skin, the embarrassment simmering. I’d let it go. I had to let it go.
With a sigh, I grabbed my jacket and headed for the door. “Perfect family,” I muttered under my breath, rolling my eyes. “Right.”
Then I heard a shout from below. “JAYDEN! Gran is here!”
