Backbacking with the Boys - Cameron

Everyone in this story is 18+

Cameron

As we drove to Cameron’s house, my mom glanced over at me, her expression warm and a bit playful. “You need to look after your best friend Cam,” she said. “He’s such a sweet boy.”

“Yeah, I know,” I replied, rolling my eyes slightly. It wasn’t like I needed reminding, but I appreciated her concern.

With a knowing smile, she continued, “And I packed some condoms for you both in your backpack.”

I nearly choked on my breath, heat rushing to my cheeks. “Mom!” I exclaimed, glancing out the window to hide my embarrassment. “Jesus…!”

“Just be responsible. Remember what happened to your Uncle Aldo? He’s still paying child support,” she said, her tone light but serious.

“Sure, Mom,” I muttered, trying to suppress a grin at how awkward the situation was.

When we pulled into Cameron’s driveway, I spotted him leaning against his new car, his posture relaxed. He wore grey sweatpants that clung to him, doing nothing to hide his package. The boys often teased him for it, but he seemed completely unfazed, wearing it with innocent confidence. His blue eyes sparkled in the sunlight as he smiled.

As my mom and I got out to greet him, she tousled Cameron's blonde hair affectionately. I noticed how he lit up at the motherly touch, his expression brightening even more. It contrasted sharply with how I hated it when my own mom did the same to me.

“Hey, Dan!” Cameron called out, straightening his white tee that hid his slight six-pack. He was a bit skinny like me but still had abs without any effort. His face lit up with excitement. “Ready for our adventure?”

“Absolutely!” I replied, feeling a rush of excitement as I stepped out of the car.

As Cameron adjusted the straps and pulled his own backpack from the back, he turned to my mom with a broad smile. “Hi, Mrs. Miller! Thanks for the ride. I promise I’ll keep an eye on Dan.”

“Oh, I’m sure you will, Cameron,” she replied, her eyes sparkling with amusement. “It’s Asher and especially Brady I’m concerned about!”

Cameron chuckled, looking between my mom and me. “Trouble? Brady? Never!” He gave me a playful nudge.

My mom laughed, shaking her head. “Just don’t let Brady pull you two into too much trouble.”

“Don’t worry, we’ve got it covered,” Cameron assured her, then turned back to me with a conspiratorial grin. “We’ll be good. Right, Dan?”

I shook my head, fighting a smile as I rolled my eyes at his antics. “Right.”

After stowing the backpack in the trunk, I glanced back at him. “You ready?”

“Born ready!” he replied, his eyes sparkling with anticipation.

As we climbed into the car, I felt a mix of excitement and comfort. Having Cameron by my side always made me feel more at ease, and I was looking forward to the adventure ahead. A part of me felt a twinge of guilt, though, knowing how much Cameron had lost when his own mom passed away. My mom had become something of a surrogate mother for him, and I couldn’t help but feel a bit protective of that bond.
