"The Grundhound" Monster Final Artwork and Brush Set!

I had meant to paint the Grundhound earlier this month live on Twitch, but just couldn't bring myself to do it. Our little french bulldog Dakota passed away right before our scheduled stream, and I just had to put this aside for a while. As much as I hadn't meant for this creature to be a caricature of her, it really was. She was a crazy little demon, but she was our crazy little demon, and we loved her.

It's been a few weeks now and I had thought I was just going to pick a different monster for the month and leave the Grundhound as is, but that felt wrong too. That would be forgetting her and what an impact she had on our little family. So I started the painting again, now as a tribute to her.

In the above image you can see my initial version. When I began I drifted away from the whole lava-cracked-hellhound approach for something more naturalistic. But in the end, the lava cracks felt more appropriate to the original concept sketch (and honestly, to Dakota), so I added them back in.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy it. She was a terror, but we loved her. We will miss you Dakota.

Note: The brush set contains a new All-Purpose brush called "AP - Rip n Tear Watercolor" which is my new favorite brush. This month's monster was painted primarily with that one.
