"The Turtle Hydra" Hi-Res Drawing for the Monster of the Month for July!

This month's monster is The Turtle Hydra! He was the runner-up in last month's vote, and I have been eager to take a shot at this guy ever since. Turtles are such fun creatures to draw, and in particular, snapping turtles are my favorite! They are such wild and monstrous looking creatures when you really start to look at them closely.  I had a lot of fun just adding a head here and another head there, lopping off the occasional one, seeing a few more grown in its place; you know, the usual back and forth you have when dealing with a determined hydra.

The Turtle Hydra was drawn with Staedtler Mars Lumograph pencils on  Strathmore smooth lightweight bristol.

I always aim to keep the color phase to 5 hours, but have never actually hit that mark. And with this many heads this one seems like a tall order. We will see!

I don't really have anything specific I can point to for this at the minute. The short answer is: Get a large sheet of watercolor paper and splash some color on it, scan it in, and then overlay this as a multiply layer on your drawing. That's the basic idea. The longer, more involved answer will be coming in a tutorial post I'm currently working on about how to make a template like this that you drop your work into after you scan it in!

I love this so much! Do you have any resources or tips for toning your sketches in photoshop? I love the look of the paper you get before painting!

Aidan Warlow

Haha yes! He has definitely seen some action.
