TfD Poll: Should a Werewolf be Immortal?

Should a werewolf be subject to a regular human lifespan?

Comments

If someone changes into a werewolf then their internal organs should remain the same. Slow down the human ageing process while transformed. So if you've got a lung with smokers cough there will be a wolf on the moors with a hacking howl. If you wear an diabetic patch would that be attached during the process and when you've transformed back would it be stuck to a patch of fur? Apologies I went off in a tangent, I don't think they should be immortal, I'll get my coat

In my canon, if an elderly person gets bitten (and survives the change) their werewolf form is a young adult, but the human form ages at a normal rate backwards. That way it's more plausible to keep the secret and people don't go all, "hey, you looked like a crone yesterday, what happened?"

What I mean is that say Emily is still a WereWolf after 50 years. She is bound get some wolf-ish features in human form. Kind of like a genetic mutation.

I have issues with wolf features in human form because it puts a wrench on the whole secret thing. Like if you can tell that someone is a werewolf in human form, where's the mystery?

RayO_ElGatubelo

In my own setting WereBeasts (Or WereAnimals as they are called), are gifted with the abilities. They ain’t “cursed” per se. More like gifted with some drawbacks

Rob Holl Jr

If they have a long lifespan they should have more wolf features in human form to better distinguish themselves.

Rob Holl Jr

I think their life spans should be extended because every time they change their body is rebuilt again. I also think wounds should remain until a change in what ever direction. The transformation process is what rebuilds them. There body is rebuilt according to dna blueprint. So not only would it heal wounds but fix abnormal tissue damage like cancer or a birth defect or age. Aging should be slowed down. If they stop changing the they deal with everything like every one else This would possibly leave them vulnerable to anything that causes instant death though. So not immortal per se. just my thoughts anyway.

Then there's a matter of the kind of immortality they possess: are they age-locked from the point they're infected, age-locked at a fixed point later in life or their "prime", or a flavor that borders on vampirism?

J.K. Spencer

Depends on the universe you're building. To prolong their lifespan slightly beyond the average human or allow them to age normally, either will still strip them of their humanity by taking the time spent as "themselves". Some come to terms and achieve some balance, but not everyone is so "lucky". There's room for immortal werewolves, though, but if I had to choose between one that had at least one weakness over several, I'd rather deal with one who had several. ;)

J.K. Spencer

I don't think they should be immortal but they should have longer lifespans than humans. I would also prefer it if they have this ancient, "older than the trees" vibe about them - like they look old but they are super strong.

chelseayzel

They suffer during the transformation , lose their humanity no longer have a social life , they must find an advantage in this curse. Immortality!

But crunchy peanut butter is the true evil we've all almost choke on that missed piece 😆

Cinder2004

Yup

Thad Goy

I agree with those who say they shouldn’t be immortal but should live longer than the average human and be much stronger, healthier, and younger in appearance, like maybe a 50-year-old werewolf looks 30.

howlingfan

But don't dogs love peanut butter?

RayO_ElGatubelo

Peanut allergy 🤣

Deedee Knowles

Personally I can't wait to see a werewolf with false teeth and a hip replacement 😏😂

Deedee Knowles

Yeah, even in my setting, there's four ways to kill a werebeast: silver, fire, wolfsbane, and decapitation.

RayO_ElGatubelo

More like a mix, age normally, but the appearance is slower to change, so they look younger than they actually are with a slightly longer lifespan.

Ashigashma

Well, werewolves may be immortal in stories but that doesn't mean they won't die

Thad Goy

I'm always suspicious of humans becoming immortal (I'm looking at you Marvel!). I don't mind immortal beings like ancient gods, but the human interest drops so much if they can no longer die. And for a werewolf, forget it. It's a curse and the ways out should be limited and mostly dark. As funny as Griffin Dunne and his undead werewolf victims were in AWIL, it actually added a strong moral conflict as David realized he was only going to create more of them unless he committed suicide.

Agent00Soul

I'd rather have something in-between, like higher life-span (double / triple / quadruple?), but not immortal.

Goblinounours

Longer life span yes ageless no they're still alive and can choke on a peanut!

Cinder2004

My werewolves are immortal, but it really depends on the setting and what the authors like. Like, if vampires also exist in the world, it would make sense that werewolves might also be immortal?
