Watched Battle Royale (2001) on a whim last night. Well, rewatched for me, Leslie had surprisingly never seen it! I read the manga way back in high school and remember being slightly disappointed with the movie at the time for feeling too "condensed". Unfortunately, it's weirdly hard to just find the original Japanese language release on streaming services, so had to settle for a pretty mediocre dub.

But horrible teenage dub acting aside... I appreciate it way more now as an adult. Especially after two solid decades of experiencing so many things that took direct influence from it. Sometimes, it's easy to forget that like, almost everything from the danger zones and random weapon drops of PUBG and Fortnite were directly taken from this. Even the settings, announcements, and general tone can be later seen in stuff like Danganronpa. Hell, I'm pretty sure the voice of Sirei in Last Defense Academy is doing his best to sound like Beat Takeshi's dubbed voice, because it's practically identical. Though I also wanted to briefly mention just how great Takeshi is in this movie, giving a subtle bit of nuance to his character that really drives the entire movie. The movie at times feels more like a series of dark vignettes, but it comes together extremely well.

Then I went and reread the manga and WOW is it DOG SHIT, IT'S SO ASS. Just pure edgy bullshit, oh my GOD.

I really gotta get back into Last Defense Academy.
