So, I told myself that the next time Final Fantasy XI went on sale, I would finally try it out. It's the only FF game I haven't played, and as a huge fan of FFXIV, I feel it would be a disservice not to check out its forebearer. Helps that everything I've heard just makes the game sound extremely interesting. And this week, the game went on sale for $10 with 30 free days, so it was finally time.

Everybody had warned me about how making a PlayOnline account was basically the first boss of the game, and I can see why. It's a weirdly obtuse process, especially if you don't have a guide. But it wasn't too bad, and it was weirdly kind of fun to speedrun the process a second time when I eventually had to make an account for Leslie as well (who was on the fence about the game until they saw me play). After roughly 7 hours of setting it up (including 4 hours of downloading the game which is incredibly slow no matter how fast your internet is, and then configuring settings and all that), Leslie and I have arrived at Vana'diel.

Blog is already getting a bit long, so I'll just have to save more thoughts for after. Haven't made any story progress at all yet, Leslie and I are already level 15 just running around Bastok and exploring and figuring things out. But my god... I get it. I fucking get it. It's been hard to pull ourselves away from it. Once you meet the game on its terms and get more familiar with its many systems, there's undeniably just something really cool about it. I'll have so much more to talk about next time.
