What Format Do You Read Stories off of Patreon?

Hey folks!

This is just a super-curious poll from my end, I don't know if it will end up affecting anything but I think it's one of those good stats to be aware of.

And, if anyone has thoughts on another file format I should look at adding to releases, please let me know! I can't do all that much about the extra spacing on paragraphs in the posts (the editing time to fix it when I copy text over is kind of onerous) but if there's a simple extra file type folks want to see I can look into it.

Cheers!
~Break.

Count me as "Other, subtype weird" - I pull the raw text out of the web page and dump it to MarkDown. That allows both applying my own css to the resulting document, and fixing the occasional minor error that slips past your editing process.

Cilarith

I use the aloha app for downloading ePub. then transfer to Google Play books. Can bokmark and highlight my favorite scenes

Jørgen Movik Schellhorn

Some of the Sponsored series are running longer than I expected, so they should be getting some bundles sooner than later.

BreaktheBar

I wish when series were done or at major milestones (100 chapters/end of series) there was one big epub for my kindle. Love to get and read the email otherwise.

Stephanie Miller

This. If it's a story I'm caught up on i typically read it on Patreon in one sitting. If I have a long way to go I'll download the ePubs to make it easier to track place.

Roxconn

Unaware of the benefits of this and curious if you don't mind explaining the difference in end product.

Roxconn

I check patreon about twice a day and my email once(ish), so I'll read the post wherever I ghost come across it. And then I downloaded the epubs for the dirty 20s

Daedalus Legendre

I convert the epubs into an html format that I use with different authors for consistent formatting. Always appreciate stable file names.

anony mouse

I would read more in the app if it wasn’t so easy to go back to the previous screen/page and lose my place in what I was reading. Super annoying as the posts get longer. For the really long chunks, I use Patreon from a browser to download the epub — on my iPhone, clicking on the epub link doesn’t do anything. PDF does work IIRC.

ANerdInAnEmptyNest

Like many others, the e-mail is a trigger that you've done a posting in Patreon. I know I've read one or two in the e-mail format, but somehow looking different matters, and if I'm reading it hours later, I appreciate checking the comments in Patreon, as well - which we can't do on the e-mail.

WSV

I copy the text out of the Patreon web site to a text file and listen to them with a Text to speach app. The posts are the most up to date because you usually correct the errors there first.

FZ Moto

Same here. If it's only available in pdf, I copy and paste it to a text file for my eReader, as it handles that better than pdfs

Christopher Bennett

Epub. It lets me control formatting.

LongStrider

I read the EPUBs on Google Play Books, where they seem to have some rendering issues

EkacElppaEnip

Same!

lulskartkski

epub normally, sometimes pdf

Bill

In the email, but I love the compilations in an EPUB.

Shadracht

Mostly Patreon post but sometimes the pdf

DocEGJ

I read with my laptop, and love downloading the pdf, which is also my preferred reading method

Trav

I give it an initial read right here in Patreon, but afterwards I will often grab the epub as well

Tumakhunter

I use epub and read it on my mobile device

Tyler

I read from the email when I’m feeling impatient, but ultimately love downloading ePubs to store them on my Kindle

Yitzhak Brill

First choice for me is epub. But I am also a little bit OCD-ish in wanting to have the entire story in the same file format. So for QT:NW i still read the pdf files, because the first chapters are not available as epub. Same for FoF, until the new bundles of the older chapters are complete.

Jens

I mostly do voice to text, and Patreon App (and website for that matter) don't work well with my prefered voice to text app. So I usually just download an epub. PDF works too, but requires an extra conversion step.

Anon Donner

Usually a 50/50 for me between the Patreon app and my email. Depends mostly on where I see the update notification first

John-Paul Runchey

Mostly on the app or website but if too big for that ePub and into the kindle app

Michael Duke

Same. Especially as the mobile app often kicks me out of the post back to the main page with no easy way to get back to when I was

Jeffrey

Same as Zaralith. On the site/app for smaller updates, dl epub for longer stories

Andrew Davis

On my old iPad I’ll download the PDF and then use the iOS option to share the file over to Kindle. In the share dialog, need to go into PDF Options and select “Make layout adjustable “. Works great for me.

Milambus

I love the epubs, but then they are not available in the app, but it sucks in resuming if you have to take a break.

Scott MacLean

I generally read direct on the website (boo the app) so i have access to comments. For long like books, epub

Zaralith

They do but they only read 1 page at a time so you have to be able to change the pages

Tammy Hoffman

For the extra spacing, if you turn on special characters, you may be able to just find and replace. It's probably ¶¶ to ¶. I do that a lot when people put an extra space after a period or other weird recurring formatting errors. Depends on what exactly is causing it and the software, of course.

FlareNight

Unfortunately, Patreon is really a terrible site for reading serials at all IMO. No indication of last read post, no way to easily jump to next/previous chapter, italics is STILL broken after all this time... Because of this, I most often just read the email directly.

HN

Hoo boy, this one varies widely. If I'm at home and on the computer, I'll read it on Patreon.com, if I'm on the tablet, then in the app. On break at work, I'll read the emails. If the author is nice enough to offer bulk book sized files and it's good enough to re-read, then I love the ePub's. About the only format I'm not a fan of is the PDFs as they suck at adjusting to screen sizes.

Rene Churchill

Just FYI, speechify claims to support epub as well.

HN

PDFs that can be read in liquid mode are usually better than epub imo. Idk about the difficulty in formatting between the two from a publisher's view though.

DevilDoc82

I usually read on the patreon app, with dark mode on the app it makes for a pretty good Reading expérience. I however prefer Epub on my prefered e-reader so I usually save the all epubs in case I want to do a reread of a specific story.

Kalak

I generally read the post or epub. Depending on the author and their savviness with Adobe, I read some in PDF and use liquid mode

DevilDoc82

PDF is generally terrible as an on-screen format for mobile devices, but as already mentioned it's good for text-to-speech access. I would use the epub format by choice, except that the whole "get the text from Patreon into the ebook app and read it there" process is a bit cumbersome and annoying. So, I just read them immediately in the Patreon app, even though that's not ideal (no scroll bar or other navigational aid, no search, etc).

Christopher Tate

Depends on the story/author single chapter posted on patreon I'll read there maybe only place to read it) Some only do PDF/epub so that's on the Kindle. If longer and have PDF/epub I'll read there.

Travis Shaw

I prefer to read on my ereader via the epub, but if it's a short update to an ongoing story, I often read in the Patreon app. Example: OFG/AMA: Epub. DM & D20s: Patreon

Dude

Oh, that's strange. I'll have to look into that. I generally just download an epub file from GoogleDocs. I'll check if there's something there.

BreaktheBar

I would say depending on time. Patreon, email and epub.

Richard Knight

With the pdf files we can use speechify when we are exercising or driving is great to have our stories to listen to

Tammy Hoffman

Can’t really answer in the poll, because it’s convoluted. Your EPUB files are… strange. The line spacing is super small, and I can’t seem to change it in my reader (Yomu on iOS). So I download the PDF file and then convert those to epub in calibre, and read those 😂

Damien Dark

I would say that it depends, yours are large and long texts so ePub that I am sending to my phone. Some other authors, usually from the Patreon app.

Alex Frenkel

I read on patreon, but will often download the files to reread on my Kindle later.
