Illustrated Novel: Poll 1 - Genre

It's time for a new project! After breaking through 600 Patrons, I am thrilled to start looking at starting this goal rolling.

But a good 'new thing' should come with a comprehensive plan!

So, first as a 'Mission Statement' and a reminder to us all: The Illustrated Novel will be an original erotic novella, about 25,000-30,000 words in length, and we will partner with an artist who will create ~10-12 illustrations for the story of both erotic and non-erotic moments. The project will be released on Patreon first, and eventually released to the public.

Alright - with that reminder out of the way, let's look at decisions that need to be made!

1) What genre is the story going to be in? (That's this poll!)

2) What/Who is the Main Character? (Erotic comics often focus on a female main character because people like following the visual of a female more than a male, but most of my work is male-PoV)

3) What Artist will I work with, and in what way? (This won't be a poll - it very much depends on who is available and interested, if they are interested in a partnership or a work-for-hire deal, and what their prices are).

4) Depending on the deal with the artist, here I either begin writing the story myself and getting character art developed for the main characters (work-for-hire), OR I start developing the story with the artist (Partnership).

5) I write the story! (Likely releasing an Alpha draft)

6) Once the story is complete, the Artist will start work on the illustrations. How do I release it? All at once, illustration by illustration? Story first, then illustrations as they finish?

And all that brings us to a finished project!

The Big Question: What Genre Should The Illustrated Novella Be?

As a reminder, the story WILL be an erotic work, and as you all know I have a tendency to lean 'Haremy' so probably a bit of that too. No worries there.

Unlike when we ran the poll for my writing retreat and ended up with Starship Repo, because I'll be working with an artist I need to remain a bit more open in terms of content - they need to have a say in the story too for them to be really invested! That means the voting is going to be a bit more generic.

The vote is multi-choice (if you are on the App you may need to back out and re-enter the post to vote for more than one option).

Cheers!

Or the illustration is from the MC POV. If it's sci-fi, having a HUD overlay can pull the viewer into a first person perspective.

I generally like the fantasy genre myself. So, an adventure with a throuple would pique my interest.

Your take on the modern day superhero genre would be interesting to read. Or a sci-fi military space opera style story.... the possibilities! 😁

Kahunabob

there's nothing wrong with using the male MC POV for an illustrated work, as most of the illustrations could focus on the women around him and his interaction with them. like in a fight the MC is in the corner of the scene with his sidekicks centered and to the other side... techniques I've seen in other works.

DevilDoc82

That's a good way of looking at it! Demigods, super powerful wizards, epic-sized monsters, etc.

So like Hercules or Xena?

Josh Will

Classic fantasy/medieval/historical setting, but with Super Hero and Super Villain characters, versus a modern Super Hero story like Marvel/DC/Invincible

Had to give Military Sci-fi my vote as well. It’s still something we rarely see in both erotica and haremlit (fantasy or superhero stuff tend to be more popular), so I’d definitely love to see your take on the genre!

What is the difference between Fantasy/Super Heroes and Modern/Super Heroes?

Josh Will

This would be cool! And I'll keep it in mind - the reality is, though, there aren't many artists who do Mecha so it can be a niche/expensive art. I'll definitely keep it in mind though if I find the right artist!

BreaktheBar

Looking forward to it! Just throwing the first idea that came to mind out there: Sci-fi / military. Mecha suits with smutty tech required to connect with the pilot.
