Beware! Blender 3.4 saved files not backwards compatible.

Wow. Can't believe it. Blender has decided NOT to make materials saved in Blender 3.4 backwards compatible. If you have any mix node in a material, and save it in Blender 3.4, when you open it in any earlier version of Blender, it won't work. See the video.

Blender should at least offer an addon to fix this. Ugh.

Not sure because 3D coat has been pretty successful being an AIO pipeline. And recently they just added hard surface next to voxel sculpting, their technology has passed Zbrush already.

You should check my Discord as Anthony Aragues wrote a script and posted it there that can automatically replace all those non-defined nodes with the proper ones. Http://cw1.me/discord

I got hit by this a few months ago. Was a big issue when I was testing out a 3.4 beta for some of the geometry node features, and a render farm didn't support it yet. Since I couldn't go back to an earlier version, I had to do a lot of 'creative' problem solving.

I think Blender should be carving a slot in a professional CG pipeline now that they are being taken seriously, but I think they are trying to become the entire CG pipeline, but I don't think it will be sustainable in the end to build a tool that tries to complete against every dedicated tool at once.

Yea, I'm coming to the conclusion that blender is a great modeling tool, especially with add-ons, etc. They create an insane workflow that no other tool can replicate. Though I think Blender what's to be everything to all people, and that's just leading to a lot of shallow features in all areas, rather than deep development in what other programs can't provide. It kind of feels like Blender is so good at everything anymore that it's actually not great at anything lol.

Blender, as a surface modeler, is very different from Unity and Unreal in that they only need render polygons, whereas Blender needs to edit them. That's why it's slower. I agree with you that it would be good for the dev team to spend some time on UI/UX instead of continually adding more and more features.

Time for a fork? I have such a love/hate relationship with blender. I always want to do everything in it, but it's getting to the point where other tools are just vastly superior at the things blender lacks. It looks like a joke when I import a mid-high end car model into blender to render, add a plane for a ground, and all the sudden my 7,000$ PC with a 3080ti and 64 gigs of ram locks up. Meanwhile that same car can be imported into Unreal and be surrounded by trillions of faces of mega scans assets and I see no viewport lag whatsoever. I think the dev team needs to chill on shallow implementations of new features, and optimize and complete the features that got them here in the first place... While the UI is quite weird currently, and a lot of things are different I was actually quite impressed with the little bit of time I have spent in 3D coat. While it seems to have the reputation of a substance painter like tool, it essentially is the closest thing I've seen to blender, but it seems a lot more stable and performant.

Yup

I think it’s cause the mix shader done got combined. So it can’t read and rgb anymore. I had a few I had to change that node then it worked again

I'm with you. I try and report on Devtalk too. Seems quite arbitrary.

Another well thought out feature - I think they just don't give a crap anymore about the user experience... they keep adding new stuff (to keep up with the Joneses or show off to other software companies that they are not small potatoes anymore - whatever) and create dumb situation like this - if you report or complain about idiotic situation on Devtalk, they tell you to shut up or take a hike - not very professional! ... check the horrible debacle with the support of Cycles HIP for AMD GPU's -- what a mess and a disappointment!

Thanks for the warning.
