So, I thought I'd take some cycles and knock it out. It's one way how I light scenes. I think there are some nice tips and tricks you'll find valuable.
Yes, turn of "Multiple Importance" in the light properties panel.

Great tips, I learned a lot. Do you have any tips how to get rid of the sphere shape reflection from the pointlights? Or would you just have to downsize the radius of the individual pointlights? (btw, I think you can instance lights if you want to make global changes to the linked ones). I wish you could put modifiers on lights though, like mirror, or array.
