2020-11-08 04:39:24 +0000 UTCI did some extensive study on columns and rows detail when writing a book on data visualization. What I came up with was that columns are first order because screens are wide, as soon as you switch to a mobile device that is in a portrait orientation then rows are first order... so it could be about being perpendicular to the longest measurement.
