Design Patterns

For those of you who don't know, my original education is a Master's degree in Industrial Design where we did our sketches with markers by candlelight. And, over the past 100 years, I've designed for just about everyone, including Apple, IBM, Sony, NASA, Toshiba, Disney, Elon Musk and a host of others.

In grad school, I taught drawing, perspective, rendering and did research on design patterns for my thesis. I've always been fascinated with understanding what works and doesn't work.

I'm currently working on a Design Pattern note series, which are just some of my thoughts about design-- especially as it refers to sci-fi concept designs. Of course these "Chipp's Tips" aren't cast in stone or anything even remotely like-- but they do give food for thought. And like any design patterns, they can be successfully broken by talented designers.

Still, these Design Patterns will make for a new product I'm working on, that has to do with KIT OPS.

So, here are the first 6 pages of notes. Please comment if you find something interesting or just want to chat about it!

Seems at least that long-- maybe 200.

100 years?

Nice, but I think it is harder to model than B.

Sorry, I don't really know of any book on design patterns. These are just patterns I've discovered over 40 years in the business. I think it's considered improper and even dangerous for designers to create recipes for good design. This is primarily because people say there are always exceptions to any rules, and it's always better for designers to develop their own style. Overall, I think giving people a base point from which to start from, is a better approach.

Very good... and simple when you really think about it :) Cheers Chipp!

Great presentation. To me, mech leg A looks better - more elegant.

Awesome, I couldn't stop thinking about this topic and wondered if you had any good resources for courses or books or websites (don't really want to spend 40k or more a degree ) on the topic of design patterns. I think this is so overlooked in most design and would help me speed up or at least, improve my design process by following known guidelines and know when to break the rules for the better.

Glad you like them. I have a bunch more in the queue :-D

Awesome thank you Chipp! I am a UX/UI designer (3D hobbyist) and use layout Grids often and have been experiment with golden ratios for layouts. Design patterns are universal for 2D, 3D, and found in nature.

More of these! They're so helptful!

I love design tips, these are GOLD!
