Considered to have descended from the Ancients, vampires have been a part of the market since the birth of its society. In the beginning, they took more monstrous forms. Perching atop high cathedrals or buildings that stretched closer to the sky, they waited for their prey before diving down and taking their fill. Before the market walls, vampires were the deepest threat within the society, acting more like their monster counterparts as opposed to contributing members of a flourishing realm. When the walls of the Night Market proper were erected, the first vampire, Emmaleine, decreed that the vampires themselves would need to integrate, following a set of orders. Her descendants rebelled against her, enacting a coup in hopes to overthrow her from her position of power.
A decade long struggle broke out in which Emmaleine was nearly slain. On the eve, when the moon was the highest, Emmaline’s direct fledglings drug her from her home and into the newly erected streets. They stabbed her in the chest several times before stringing her up upon the highest point of the local cathedral. She was to bleed from there and serve as a warning to other vampires, underlying the point that vampires were meant to be monsters, not community members. But as the town gathered to watch her bleed, Emmaleine opened her eyes. She broke from her chains, becoming three times larger than her original form. She slew all that had touched her that day.
The vampire faction was split in two at that point, some becoming members of society while others took to the Outlands to form their own factions. Rumors began to spread that Emmaleine was touched by the Knowing. That she had gained and broke favor with the god in one day. Many vampires of Emmaleine share similar qualities to that of the Knowing but have evolved their own practices to suit their ways of life. To this day, followers of Emmaleine still conduct business inside the abandoned houses of worship dedicated to the cosmic entity of the Knowing. Most vampires now still try to integrate themselves within the Night Market society while leaving their brethren to become monsters who lurk in the shadows.
