Extraordinary Attorney Woo Episode 9

This week’s episode takes on a complex and morally challenging case as Young-Woo defends the self-proclaimed leader of the "Children's Liberation Army," a man who has kidnapped 12 schoolchildren. His mission, as he sees it, is to free them from the excessive pressures of overbearing parents. With the defendant openly admitting to his crime and standing firm in his belief that his actions were just, the case proves exceptionally difficult for Young-Woo and the team. It forces her to think outside the box to find a way to advocate for him within the bounds of the law.

Meanwhile, her evolving relationship with Junho takes centre stage in lighter moments. A series of hilariously awkward misunderstandings, spurred on by misguided advice from her friends, continues to complicate their dynamic, leaving viewers both cringing and rooting for them.

The episode concludes with a sobering reminder of the underlying themes and challenges that shape the series, ensuring the audience remains engaged with the bigger picture. With its mix of humour, heart, and thought-provoking moments, this episode is one not to miss!

Here was an interesting article about this episode and the Korean educational system that came out when it aired. https://m.koreatimes.co.kr/pages/article.amp.asp?newsIdx=334103

You nailed that, Kerry. The writer and the drama were really trying to show to the viewers, specifically Koreans, how unhumane their educational system is. Kids not just need to study at school, but also need to go to 'hakwon' (after-school institutions) and have tutoring for subjects they find difficulties for... This has been an ongoing issue in Korea (and other first and second world countries in Asia) yet people find no resolution. After this episode was released, the discussion about the unfair and extreme system resurfaced. Petitions were sent to the ofc of their president. I don't know if there was any thing that came after that though. This episode was one of those that they intentionally leave the judgement to the viewers. It's honestly unsettling... As you also mentioned, out of all the cases so far, this seems to be unrealistic. And yes, my remaining understanding for Bang Goo left me when he confirmed to the judge that he'll still do the same thing again. Aside from that, I think I personally got fixated on the part that the situation could've been prevented if only Bang Goo's mother listened to him. Instead of kidnapping the kids, he could've just asked his mom to have few hours of recreational subject in the institution. Parents will be fine with that given that he's known to graduate in the prestigious university.
