2024-06-24 08:01:11 +0000 UTCIf you are interested in Korean music, you can't really avoid Immortal Songs. It's been on KBS in its current form for 13 years every Saturday. It is a fundamental platform for Korean vocal performances, and if you intend to be a famous singer in Korea, you have to be on it. It will always get blocked on Youtube, so you can just plan on making it a Patreon thing. A few things about Immortal Songs that are not obvious: - It is a competition show, and that competition is _extremely_ serious. For the Chen/Baekhyun performance you just watched, SM Entertainment probably spent hundreds of employee hours coaching and arranging the performance, not to mention the practice hours. Nobody goes on Immortal Songs and "just wings it." - Everything that you are hearing is produced on stage. No tracks. Most of that stage is for whatever musicians they need (orchestra, horn section, 10 piece percussion section, whatever). There is an insanely talented vocalist section just to do backgrounds and harmonies. The live production elements are far beyond anything I've seen done in a Western television program, and I'm in that industry. - They will edit vocal performances in post-production and make them sound gorgeous, and they will do a little vocal tuning. But if you cannot sing, you aren't going on Immortal Songs. The brand is too strong. So I don't think you will ever see a marginal vocalist on this show with a performance partially/mostly created in post (like you might see on other shows). - With that said, the video editing style for Immortal Songs is just weird. They will cut from shots of the performance to other contestant performers, judges, audience members, or guests. The cuts are abrupt, quick, and without context, usually to odd facial expressions and reactions most of the time. At this point, it is just part of the odd charm of the show. - If you see them cut to an older person, that may be the original artist for the song, or the original composer. The format is for the contestants to perform "immortal" songs, which means classic, timeless songs. Expect to be amazed when you watch Immortal Songs clips. This Chen/Baekhyun performance is pretty special, but there's a lot more amazing performances than this on Immortal Songs. The standard is very high.

2024-06-24 03:36:52 +0000 UTCFrom what I remember, the reason they didn’t win was the judges felt there wasn’t enough connection between their performance and the sorrow expressed in the song. It wasn’t about their talent, it was about their life experience, or lack thereof. Baek and Chen did say, when their relative youth and the weight of the song were brought up during the chat before they started singing, that they had never been in love or had their hearts broken. They said to prepare they had asked older people (I think they said “aunties“) for their wisdom. I’m no expert, so I can’t say that assessment had no merit, but I still think they should have won. 😊

I realise that this got blocked and that'll probably decentivize you from further immortal songs reactions but I would love if you reacted to their other two performances on the show (from around the same time but with more members) as they're also great.

I had to convert it to mp3 so I can listen to it hahahhaha 🙈🙈🙈 Yeah, they didnt win immortal songs in that edition but the competition ia fierce. Regardless though they did such a great job and the high long note are just eargasm worthy. Well now you know why we discussed it not once on Discord for you to react to it.
