Bastetodon

A few weeks ago, a research article described a new genus of prehistoric mammal -- Bastetodon. The name was enough to get my attention, and yes, it honors Bastet herself. Fitting enough, since the described skull was recovered in the Fayum Depression of Egypt. This is now a vast, arid basin, but in the Oligocene epoch it was nothing short of a lush oasis.

There’s this kind of opaque quality to ancient life that gives us a little creative freedom when we imagine them, especially in the coloration department. So here's my own take. Even if the simplest forms of metallurgy were probably beyond the grasp of Oligocene anthros, gold jewelry too entwined in my imagination of old Egypt not to include one or two pieces. Allow me this one extra conceit >.>

If I'm being totally candid, part of the motivation for drawing her was knowing this could be the first furry interpretation of the species. Yeah, there’s some micro-clout to be claimed when you’re the first to draw the hot new character that just dropped, and admittedly this is a whole lot easier when it’s a 30 million year old hyaenodont than the new Bad Guys waifu. But I doubt anyone’s been champing at the bit for naked Bastetodon art, so any special satisfaction that comes out of this is probably mine alone.

I tossed in some sketches from when I was feeling out the species, figuring out what direction I wanted to go. It didn't take me too long to settle on the sitting pose, which still offered a view of the belly nipples that I think are kind of extra primal. Enjoy the prehistoric gal! Also, tell me your favorite prehistoric animal!

Thanks for including us in your accomplishment to be the first. That's pretty cool! Something to be proud of! I love your muscle work. How you got her arm to do that? Very cool. Like everyone else has said, you made that sitting pose dynamic. The sun coming from behind her like that kind of brings out just how primitive and undeveloped the world was for people like her. It also emphasizes the bracelets and small jewelry you gave her. Looks great and you got the shine just right. That look too. Those slight scars on her face from some past incident. Lots of stories to draw from that. Thanks for sharing!

So happy to hear it :) This is exactly the kind of energy I'm going for in most of my poses. Something that conveys weight and mass, and a readiness to move

Kalahari

I love seeing furry takes on obscure extinct species. It's a real surprise when I stumble across them. Sabertooth cats are pretty well represented, but it surprised me how many gorgonopsids are out there too

Kalahari

I love the simplicity yet the energy of this piece. it feels very dynamic even for a simple sitting pose.

Loving the prehistoric kick that you’re on. Very few doing it. Within the furry-fandom, I mean. So much more to explore out there!

Amazing, beautiful claws on them! https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thylacoleo

She knows how to bring home the bacon. Or the Aegyptopithecus as the case may be...

Kalahari

Haha, a man of culture ;)

Kalahari

Not sure if this is the sort you have in mind, but I've thought Thylacoleo would be fun to explore

Kalahari

That is very well done, perfect pose, composition and just absolutely lovely!

Admiral Storm

She looks great, this is a really nice pose too

I love your prehistoric critters so much. Aaaaand I really would love to see this one more for sure 😅 Really stake your claim to Bastetodon

Parker Trotter

Probably the mega marsupials would be a fave!

Goddamn_Bats

Nice! Gotta love the muscular gals, and thank you for correctly using champing instead of chomping!

Greg

I swear your hands just keep getting better. Really work an the anatomy. Everything just feels so natural.

Skyler_darkwolf

She's so muscular! But she looks so cozy, too!

Brocade

YESSSS!

Kiko
