Sea Otter

She never wanders too far from the coast. The salt in the air is too comforting, and the quality of the shellfish doesn't improve much.

Someone in my life had a real affinity for sea otters, and even while I prefer the build and esthetics of river otters myself, it seemed like a good enough challenge to anthropomorphize one. I'm hardly the first, but most of what I've seen leans too far into a realistic depiction or stays indistinguishable from "river otter". Here's my own first attempt, so lemme know where you think she lands.

The shading ended up getting a little more time than I intended, and I'm not totally sure the result was worth it. I'm always a little worried of over-rendering, which sometimes has the effect of making the subject look less natural. Weird huh.

Hope all you wonderful folks are doing okay. I've been going through a couple life changes and putting some renewed attention into art. Never a bad thing. And posting stuff like this always gives me a needed serotonin boost.

I mean, it's way easier for river otters to look naturally cute. Nothing against sea otters!

Kalahari

beautiful. like you I have more of an affinity for river otters

draegwolf

The way I usually design loincloths is with a back that's shorter and wider than the front, so you can imagine something like that for her.

Kalahari

She looks so cute. I love how you draw tribal furries. Interesting if this loincloth cover her backside too or only frontside.

Rasik

I'm beyond happy to hear that. Thanks for sticking around :)

Kalahari

You brought me to the fandom. Glad to see you are still pumping out good quality works.

Lynn

Could be a good opportunity for a DILF otter character! :D

ThatDirgeDude

They've got the thickest fur of any mammal... I'm sure you wouldn't be the first to give it some thoughtful exploration x3

Kalahari

Thanks--I absolutely had to play into the relative weight of these otters hah.

Kalahari

I'll keep that in mind for future sea otters. I know what you're talking about, and I don't think I quite nailed it. She really could use some kind of mollusc entry tool...

Kalahari

Thanks! I think you nailed something. Sea otters really do look more male than river otters, so adapting that super scruffy fur to someone more feminine is more of a challenge.

Kalahari

She's fluffy and very pretty <3 wonderful work

Slippers B Cat

What a great take on sea otter! I love her! <3

Jakerabbit

She looks amazing!!! I love the tribal outfits you come up with!

Marie The Foxy

This is lovely.

I know exactly what you mean about the rendering and I for one think you made a good call. This rendering looks great! One of the most defining features of sea otters over river otters is that they tend to have a sort of... Clam shaped nose? Hard to describe it, it's just unique! And they tend to look a bit more wirey than sleek river otts, which makes for good more masculine seafaring scallywag types. Overall, I'd say she looks lovely! Her adornments are also wonderfully designed!

ThatDirgeDude

She’s beautiful! I love her cuddly, slightly pudgy build, and her expression, friendly but also a bit enigmatic.

Stewart

The only thing I'd consider is nose shape? A little hard to capture on an anthro, perhaps, but the nose shape is one of the larger differences that would be potentially visible on an anthro. Otherwise, looks really cool, love her. She needs some sort of clam busting tool, another thing sea otts are famous for :)

MountainGoat

Always happy to see a post from you! The beginning description sounds very nice. I love the tribal touches of her loincloth and bracelets. Her relaxed demeanor matches her pudgy build so well, and wow you drew her figure beautifully! The pacific coast background looks lovely as well. I absolutely adore her face and the fur details. Perfect.

Baron03

She looks fantastic! I love her build - it totally suits a fluffy, bouyant but nimble sea otter! Would she mind me shoving my face into her belly?
