Kipper Fishing

Several years ago, when I was just getting acquainted with digital art, I drew this piece featuring an otter coming up to the surface with some freshly caught fish. They're natural fishers after all, and it's easy to imagine them gliding through the water using claws and teeth to grab their prey.

More recently, I decided to revisit that old piece since the shading was pretty flat, the environment was pretty uninteresting, and the whole thing reminds me of a time when my digital art was just shaky overall. Hopefully I've managed a few improvements over the original, but you let me know. I've thought about reimagining some other of those older pieces from years ago, but that's got to battle for my attention when I have new stuff I want to draw all the time.

I'd say you blew the original out of the water. I liked it, don't get me wrong, but this really shows how much you've improved and updated your look and skills. Very, very impressive. Wonderful anatomy work, but what really makes this one pop is the background. Sure, it's blurry but the people the activities, all the little details you've added it all makes Kip's appearance and hint of a story all that much more incredible. So many options and things to read into it. Thank you for going back and working on such an amazing piece. Looking forward to more remixes of your old work and new work you've got coming up! Good luck with it all!

It kind of makes me want to go back and revisit some other old pieces that I just didn't get quite right as I was exploring digital art. With this one, I did want to make it feel more like he was "in an actual place" but of course even if I have a setting in mind, I like leaving the details up to the viewer :)

Kalahari

It's that swimmers body! It's so easy to imagine otters using their natural gifts to hunt down and catch fish without the need for any extra equipment. Pretty useful if you happen to live by a shore (and yes, I wouldn't mind living in his city either x3) And thanks for the kind words. It's good to see the improvement year after year, and it makes me feel like I'm better able to capture the kinds of scenes in my head. Always looking to create more :)

Kalahari

I like that concept a lot. It really does feel like a younger and older version of the same otter now that I look at them both again. I've actually thought about doing a piece that involves some spearfishing! It's the natural extension of underwater fishing for these guys. It would probably suit him quite nicely. And Juno can come and share the spoils x3

Kalahari

Wow, such an improvement over the original. This new piece actually made me think about where he was, who was behind him.. Is it a resort, and he's fishing for fun, or for food... All things that I think a more dynamic piece will prompt the viewers to ask. Great job! Thank you for sharing it!

Jakerabbit

His core muscles look gorgeous, he really looks like he spends whatever time he can in the water! It's also badass how he's catching to keep with his bare hands, it's such a cool way to illustrate his natural prowess. Plus food always tastes better if you feel like you've earned it. I'm sure he'll be eating good later. I'm by no means an artist but you've definitely come far in digital art in terms of environments, lighting and shading. All of your work has an incredibly vivid liveliness and it seems to get better with each piece. The water in this one is especially impressive. Keep doing what you love! (P.s. I want to live Kipper's home city)

AveryJay

Awesome~ Well I look forward to seeing him again!

Admiral Storm

Honestly, I think both pieces are great in their own merit, but I can definitely sense your improvements and comfort with digital art in this rendition! I'd also argue that the character looks a bit younger in the original too, so maybe a version of the original with some film grain and slight sepia effect might make it a cool vintage piece that adds to this fellow's story and history for passionate traditional fishing techniques! I bet I could also imagine him getting into more nude deep-water speargun fishing too! Might be a fun subject to explore! And do you think otterfolk have their own cuisine? Might be fun to have Juno enjoying a sort of beachfront "omikaze" hosted by this otter and his fresh catches!

ThatDirgeDude

Hell yeah, then I look forward to more adventures with them. Though any piece from ya is always a visual treat haha

nyapolitan

Hopefully before too long. I'm pretty disappointed in how much time it's taken me to draw her again >.>

Kalahari

Thanks man ^^ Well, I love drawing otters and since Kip is the only recurring otter I have at the moment I can pretty much promise we'll see more of him. Especially since he's such a good and willing companion for Juno in the naturist and clothing-optional areas of town.

Kalahari

Absolutely! I have a few scenes of him sketched out, but it's now a matter of picking one and finishing it. He's been on my mind for a while though, so he'll show up before too long.

Kalahari

Thanks, I appreciate that. I feel like I tend to be my own harshest critic, which honestly is the way I like it, heh

Kalahari

I already enjoy drawing otters, and when I needed a companion for that little date series with Juno I decided to give him more of a consistent design and personality (never mind that he doesn't have the head hair in this image). I suspect he's going to be my go-to male, modern otter character going forward.

Kalahari

Really love how this turned out. The little details on the water really make a waves pop.

Skyler_darkwolf

What a pretty male specimen!

Vesorak

When does he see Juno again? ^.^

Kubulai

Your otters are always so beautiful, this lady has been my favorite for ages! https://www.furaffinity.net/view/55294619/

Goddamn_Bats

God this is such a gorgeous piece! Ever since the little series of Juno and Kip pieces featuring their hot date in the naturist district, I’ve been dying to see more of Kipper living au naturel! Hopefully we’ll learn more about him in due time :3 And this is an excellent update to an already excellent sketch (even if your view of it has soured with time and experience)! All the updates to the sketch, between the beachfront setting and modernist architecture, to the mix of clothed/nude folk in the BG, and just the general color palette and vibe… it’s immaculate!

nyapolitan

He's handsome! Even though it's a clothing-optional beach, I like how confident he looks nude among so many clothed people! I can imagine a few of them want to give his nice cock a lil tug...

Brocade

This looks great Kal! Out of curiosity, will we ever see your male fox again? Been a while since we have seen him, much like Kipper here.

Admiral Storm

"that old piece since the shading was pretty flat, the environment was pretty uninteresting, and the whole thing reminds me of a time when my digital art was just shaky overall." I disagree, I feel that pic was really well drawn! I still think that even today! There is a saying that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and I will say that all of your art has always been very beautiful no matter what you think.

Kiko

What inspired the creation of Kipper?

Kiko

That’s fair, we get that a lot :B there are some canine-forward artists who draw horses and it ends up, uh, interesting haha. The good news is just about everything else you create is incredible so no sweat!!

Rhaen

Thank you! Sorry I don't have more to show for myself. Equines are not the easiest to get right, and I've put so little time into studying them so it's a little intimidating.

Kalahari

Oh my gosh thanks for the reply! That’s a beautiful picture! Thand you for the link! You’re so talented when it comes to any species!

Rhaen

I see, for a moment I thought he was naked at a clothing required beach. Of that was the case, he is so risky.

Kiko

It's clothing optional, and there's a couple of beach-goers behind him on the right that have stripped down, even if it's hard to make out.

Kalahari

I've drawn a Pegasus-type before, but I'm realizing now it hasn't made it into my gallery. It was an illustration for "Heat" so I need to go back and see if it's okay to post publicly now. In any case, here's a link to the piece: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/zfa6kldulqaphuqm901gz/img030.tif?rlkey=ie77k50yvcssbqpfgihnymijp&dl=0

Kalahari

Nice to see Kipper again! He's definitely in his element here.

Aelius

Ohh yesss! This is so good! Although...is everyone behind him clothed?

Kiko

Do you think you’d ever draw an equine? Or have you drawn one before? 🐴

Rhaen
