De Niro was great in this and as you already know he was nominated best actor for this role but lost to Anthony Hopkins who was just too phenomenal as Hannibal Lector. Scorsese originally wanted Harrison Ford to play Nick Nolte's role as Sam but dropped out because he wanted to play De Niro's role as Max Cady.
