I always liked the politics stuff, but then again I was a political science major and I've always cared about politics. So much so, that if a couple things had turned out differently in my life I would have stayed in school after my undergrad and pursued a career in academics. It always makes me a little sad when someone says "I hate politics" or that are not interested in it. I honestly don't blame them most of the time. A lot of the time it seems like society is deigned to keep people politically disengaged. I know a lot about politics, political philosophy and all that stuff, but it's practically worthless in my day to day life. I'm the weirdo. Everyone else has has more important things to worry about which have a more immediate impact on their lives. Being able to talk a little bit about social contract theory or Marxism has never gotten me a job or gotten me laid.

"Damned if you do, damned if you don't" is a great summary of the politics of this show. I think it's easy for a lot of people watching to be like "he should just do the right thing or fuck the politics" but in reality that's asking a lot for most people when their entire careers and financial foundations are already laid out and entrenched in the system. It'd take a real saint that's willing to sacrifice a lot or someone like Mcnulty who has zero sense of self-preservation to just say fuck it, and Mcnulty ended up on the boat until he got lucky. Colvin ended up with less of a pension and lost his cushy-job over hamsterdam and season 3 in general was all about how the top brass police have to dance to the tune of city hall. This show is uniquely great at adding layers upon layers to the overall big picture.
