Commentary for The Wire - Season Three - Episodes 11 & 12

Every season finale ended with a lovely musical outro/epilogue. And then the sense of loss because you never knew if HBO would renew it for the next season.
The wait for season 4 was the worst because it was much longer than the other seasons, but it ended with what might just be the finest season of television ever made.
My favorite characters in season 3? Bunny was introduced in season 2, but he became a major player in season 3. Cutty had a beautiful arc in this season and was probably my favorite.
Marlo is interesting as he is the only major drug player we meet who is not portrayed as having an inner life at all. We only see him in full kingpin mode. Very different from Avon, Prop Joe, etc. who we see having up front conversations with other folks.
The scene in the courtroom at the end, when Marlo shows up to Avon's hearing, is the passing of the torch. In the future there will be no Barksdale crews on the streets of West Baltimore. No Stringer Bells trying to clean up the game. Oh, and no Detective McNultys fighting a holy war against the kingpins of the Baltimore drug trade and the kingpins of the Baltimore PD.
