You guys are correct, Mason Verger is being played by a different actor, Joe Anderson. Which is kind of neat as he was recently on another one of your previous reactions. He was the deputy that was with Timothy Olyphant's character in The Crazies remake.

While planning the second season, they had considered killing the character at one point, but it had nothing to do with Laurence Fishburne or contractual obligations, and they decided against it fairly quickly as they needed the character for the future. He was willing to do whatever the writers needed, and still is by the sounds of it. Also, they didn't know they'd be cancelled until the third season was finished. They knew it was a possibility, but it didn't affect the way they wrote the show any more than it did during the second season, since they were worried about cancellation from the very beginning. (One of the top executives at NBC was angry that Mads Mikkelsen was cast as Hannibal because he didn't think it was a profitable casting choice, and tried to sabotage the show's marketing and viewership before production on the first season even began, leaving Bryan Fuller [the showrunner/creator/lead writer] in constant uncertainty over whether they'd be renewed.)

Then Changed their minds and decided to make him finish his contract by having him survive. It’s not that he didn’t like the character, he just doesn’t like playing the same role for too long. That’s why his career is so varied. I think they knew S3 would be the last with nbc so they didn’t wanna leave out jack. That’s why S3 is different to the other 2, I won’t explain how until it happens.
