2023-03-12 00:13:27 +0000 UTCA tiny little editing joke they threw in during the explosion joke that I love is that the big gas tanker says OIL & FUEL on the side, and when they're setting up the possibility of it exploding, they cut to it as "OIL," "FUEL," "&..." There's one other real and one semi-cameo from the original cast of 21 Jump Street in the movie. The officer who gives them the cool car and warns them not to be "revvin' up the engine and shit" is another cast member, Holly Robinson Peete, playing her original character Judy Hoffs. The original show is also playing on the TV in the hotel room when the final shootout happens, and you can see Dustin Nguyen on the screen before it gets shot. One interesting thing is that this movie went through a few drafts. Someone sent a couple to me. There was one by Andre Nemec and and Josh Appelbaum (Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol) that was like a straight adaptation of the show. I also read a previous draft by Jonah Hill and Michael Bacall, who wrote the final script, which was surprisingly awful. The most fascinating thing about it, to me, was that literally a single thing I noticed survived from that draft to the finished movie, and it's barely even important: the drugs tasting like Doritos.

A lot of the questions you had about the subsequent sequel do get answered in a very comedically satisfying manner. I personally find the second film to be even better than the first, but it does do a ton of past references so seeing this one was pretty much mandatory. The Johnny Depp reveal was great when you remember he was the biker with the peanut butter at the start saying if they were cops he is DEA haha.
