I had the same issue as well, but if this helps try watching your own copy on a website called lookmovie2.to cos then it syncs up perfectly. I am in UK and usually would use PAL as well. So try that Caroline and see if it helps. Thanks Mr & Mrs Movies, loving your Wire reactions. I only first watched all seasons of The Wire last year (finally!)

Are you using an american copy of the show? If you’re watching in PAL format your frame rate is faster which causes your video to get ahead. It’s kind of strange. I guess movies are shorter over seas? Haha

You, Me, & The Movies

Does anyone else have an issue with this continuously un-syncing with their own copy? After 2 minutes of watching, your reaction is running nearly 20 seconds behind, making it somewhat unwatchable for me. Any advice appreciated?

I just mean that starting in S3, we have characters like Carcetti and Colvin who explain what they're going to do, explain how they're going to do it, explain why they're going to do it, then they finally do it and explain it again in case you missed it. Half the scenes with Butchie or Deacon are their scene partners saying "THIS IS MY MOTIVATION" to the folks at home, and then Butchie/Deacon says "so that's your motivation, guess that's why you'll do what you must". I just think they maybe made a conscious effort to make the show a little more explicit about certain things.

There is one single 2 second scene where you can say you had your hand held and David Simon was made to put it in by HBO. And that was the flashback to Gant in court at the end of episode 1 to help the viewer remember back 45 mins in case they did t realise who was killed. At bo other point is "your hand held".

Chris

I think I'm kinda coming around to this as well. Seasons 3-5 kinda over-explain things and hold your hand (which probably make it better for new viewers, but makes for less rewarding rewatches). The great thing about the first two is kinda learning to understand the characters and interlocking stories without that.

Kevin Hoffmann

Yeah so it looks like you value more clean storytelling. That's fair enough. There isn't an objectively better style either way. Keep in mind classic literature such as stuff like Catcher in the Rye, Great Gatsby or various short stories don't have tight stories as well. They are theme heavy and more freewheeling in their structure and The Sopranos is more like that. The Wire is a more classical sprawling epic.

I used to love The Wire, but honestly over time it's moved down my list of favorite all-time shows. I still think it's really good, but I think the drop in quality from season 3 to season 4 is pretty noticeable and ugh season 5 is just stupid. Edit: Someone said that season 4 was the favorite and it was 3 that was the worst. I may have been mistaken, it's been a while. I still think that goofy ass completely from another type of show storyline in season 5 drags the entire season down.

Jeffrey Miller

Its like you read my mind. The wire feels like a tightly written story from the start. As opposed to the sopranos which changed from the pilot and had to adapt to real world events and the death of actors. I would say that the flaws in the sopranos are things that would bother me a lot more in other series but because of the characters depth and their relationships i just don't really care. Which is why the soprano's is my favorite show even though i think the wire is the better made show

We still absorbed the conversation while having our own. The Nugget inventor still working in the basement. Just the nature of the reaction game, we gotta talk for fair use. ;)

You, Me, & The Movies

But also, interrupting the nugget dialogue is a hanging offense.

"fuck the casual viewer" - David Simon

Chris

Eh, the wire is more tightly written but the sopranos is more ambitious and creative. Both shows have their strengths and flaws. The wire is nowhere near as great as the sopranos in character interactions and relationships (nothing on the wire comes close to whitecaps for instance) But the sopranos doesnt explore society as well as the wire and again, is not as tightly written. Sopranos has some dud episodes but the wire has a dud season. So all in all I feel they’re both pretty even depending on what strengths and flaws you are more receptive to.

Veya

Guy, you are catching onto the details as fast as anyone I've seen, one episode in anyway. It's a bit overwhelming at first, it demands your attention rather than capturing it, if that makes sense. But, it pays off.

FuzzyDunlop

Imo the wire is a better made show then the sopranos but i enjoy the sopranos more. Flaws and all

mbdd

Think of this as a novel. It takes a while to build as it's such a complex story with so many characters, portrayed in great detail. Would also say that chatting over the dialogue might not be a good idea going forward. Can honestly say there isn't a wasted line in the entire show. So much subtlety in the script and you'll miss vital bits of plot very easily.

Chris

Have joined your Patreon especially for this. Probably watched the whole lot 20 times by now. Season 2 my favourite but most people will say 4.
