And that is exactly how it is in reality. It's not Hollywood, it's REAL

Carla Davis

Can’t wait for Bubbles to call it that for the first time.

GLAD😃to see You Me & The Movies reacting to this show, I enjoy your reactions on YouTube and I Highly Recommend watching this show, I’m in for the Ride👍

John Wayne. Do you need some pretty colours or a superhero to keep you engaged ? It's fine to admit something is beyond you but you can't credibly claim any of what you've said is true.

Another reason it's seen as the pinnacle for TV writing is David Simon's employment of crime novelists. Dennis Lehane, Richard price and especially George Pelecanos. When they say the story unfolds slowly, like a novel, that's the reason why. Can actually think of 3 scenes in the episodes he wrote which are lifted directly from the book Clockers by Richard Priceless

Chris

Ed Norris, Jay Landsman, Little Melvin, DeAndre Mucollough (sort of), Gary DiPasquale, Rick Requor (the real bunk), William Zorsi and even David Simon makes a little cameo a couple of times too.

Chris

Not just based on real people, but quite often the real people pop up in the show (as other characters, except for Felecia Pearson, who Mr. and Mrs. Movies won't meet for a couple more seasons).

I've seen this whole series 20 times at least and would consider my knowledge about it as encyclopedic, yet it's only now, re-watcing again with these two that I've noticed Fitzhugh talking about being into the Dominicans in new York and close to a title 3. Properly laying the background to a scene in series 2.. unreal... Just shows how detailed it all is... Mr &Mrs, I'd also recommend reading all you can about David Simon. The man is a bonfide modern day TV genius. You're right about him being embedded in the homicide dept for a year (the book that came of that is an incredible read) but his show runner partner, Ed Burns, used to be a cop (and teacher) too. Almost every character and every storyline is based on real life events or real people. So even when you feel something may be unbelievable (a scene with a photocopier in season 5 being a major one) I can assure you it isn't...

You're starting the wire? Fine, replace BSG with one of my other favorite shows! :) It's a pretty slow burn but it's so worth it.

Especially as thats bubbles calls him

Chris

That’s the one!

Which character is your favourite? It’s not spoiling anything to mention a character name I don’t think. I think your referring to Omar for most people fav but whose the character that popped up without a line? Oh. Nevermind. Ol’ Lester Smooth?

Stan the Man

John Wayne. I don’t even know what to say to this. The acting on this show is incredible. Incredible. And yes visually, it’s very tame & purposeful it’s not exactly Michael Bay or Zack Snyder style but it’s doing that on purpose. It’s going for a more documentary feel. As for the characters being likeable or unlikable. I just don’t get that. This show has a crazy deep bench of fascinating characters. Omar, Bunk, Bubbles, Stringer & Avon, Bunny Colvin, Frank Sobatka, Mcnulty, Daniels. I mean come on. I don’t think I’m giving spoilers on this when I say the show also keeps things fresh by introducing a new element of the city in every season.

Stan the Man

Everyone whose seen the show when she calls him Mcnutty had the same reaction right?

Stan the Man

Decided to sign up after seeing your started doing this series. Absolute favourite of all TV dramas. Multi-faceted and unflinching in its portrayal. Poverty, drugs, the inbuilt inefficiency of bureaucracy. There’s little to not love. I look forward to following you throughout.

Inappropriate Affect

The Wire is a masterpiece. ‘All the pieces fit.’

McNutty made me laugh pretty hard

In terms of favorite characters... man, it's too early because if I mention it'll give some things away. My absolute favorite character in the entire show has briefly popped up, had his name mentioned, but hasn't had a line yet. And the most famous character, who is most people's favorite, hasn't yet appeared. But among the ones who have gotten solid screen time in the first two episodes, Bubbles. I think Mrs. Movies will appreciate one thing about his character in particular (and the way he talks), after watching the above reaction.

Jeff K

To each our own. I think it’s a very layered show that is very uncompromising in it’s artistic vision. It’s also a very unqiue show in today’s age because structurally and stylistically speaking, they don’t make shows like this anymore. I do agree with you that it’s visually not the most flashy and it’s meant to be more mundane looking because David Simon wanted it closer to a journalistic/documentary feel, but the cinematography is good if you know what to look for. The first episode already had foreshadowing with the scene with Deangelo and Weebay outside the car if you paid attention to the visuals of that scene. Unlikeable characters become more likeable on this show, but in general, starting with The Sopranos, shows have been braver about not making the characters too cookie cutter and more complex, even if that means they don’t sanitize the unlikeable aspects of the characters.

Veya

The show is ok, but its not really very good to be honest. The main characters are pretty unlikable, the acting is ok, and there isn't a lot of visually interesting stuff happening.

John Wayne

Yep, I always tell people to stick with it at least through the first four. That’s when things start kicking into gear. It takes the time and care to set up the characters and story.

Jeff K

Definitely a slow show in general. You’ll notice that a lot of the scenes are worldbuilding and detailing the exact procedures, politics, and general culture of the settings, both street and office. So fair warning, unlike The Sopranos which is a far more experimental/arthouse type show that was able to shift and morph, The Wire will stay pretty static in its storytelling. However the layers start forming episode by episode and season by season. Most people aren’t immediately hooked by the first couple of episodes so the Mrs’s reaction isn’t uncommon. It’s generally once people become more in tune with what the show is trying to do and get to know the world and characters better that they start to enjoy it more.
