I wasn't too hot on Kathleen's character either, but I did kind of piece together on my second watch that the reason she's in charge is because of how much everyone respected her brother. The way Henry talked about him, and Perry...I think her followers were kind of reluctant, as we were as viewers, seeing her being a ruthless leader.

Love how Mrs. Movies can't help to talk about spoilers. Definitely hard to hide things that we already know so I know exactly how she feels lol.

Yeah I'm with you Mr. Movies. I think the real problem is we don't have enough episodes for this one season. If we had one more episode just to flesh out Henry, Sam, and the Hunters more, than their endings would have felt like a better payoff. I think the scenes we were given were well acted and written, but not earned. We didn't have enough time with these characters to form a strong enough bond and I think just an extra episode would have done the trick. Personally I would have also wanted more of Ish and co, maybe one of those Cold Opens they've so masterfully done in past episodes, but I understand with the limited time they have, they can't fit everything into the season. First time watchers are enjoying this episode, which I'm personally happy for them because they get the gist of what the Neil was going for, but I'm sure there are some fans who love the details like you and I who are a bit disappointed.

I think Kathleen was perfectly cast and I think she is in power like many in the modern MAGA movement... the cruelty is the attraction. Cruelty against the people that have kept kicking you in the face (real or perceived). The politics of grievance is powerful and violent retribution is how you can both mollify and stoke the crowd. Also, keep in mind that Kathleen wasn't in power very long. She was followed because she was the very close sister of the movement's very very beloved leader. She didn't have to be very competent to keep power for how short she was actually in charge. They are also in complete chaos. In that situation, there isn't a lot of time to assess how you feel about the situation. They were kicking a lot of ass and the crowd LOVES it. She enabled the crowd to be as cruel as they wanted. I'm not sure a level-headed leader would have been able to take power away from her.

Ellie's whimper when Henry did what he did was heartbreaking. She is such an incredible actor.

You just told me what she did, which I am aware of. My criticism is, you literally just told me everything the show told me she did in a single paragraph and I'm supposed to believe she's this motivational and inspirational leader. But everything I've seen her do as a leader is make horrible decisions and simply tell people what to do. In a well-made story, you are shown how powerful a leader is, not told by a character after they couldn't find said person while they were out running around doing things. Kathleen was a horrible character, nothing to do with the performance of the actress, which was decent with what she was given, but she just was not a believable character in a 20-year apocalyptic world. Perry's infatuation for her was also unbelievable. She dismissed every concern he expressed to her in the two episodes we see him in. In the end, her brother kept them alive for 20 years alongside FEDRA. It took them 2 weeks to die under Kathleen's leadership. I think that was the irony they were going for with the writing it just was not well presented nor believable.
