For the missus-the way bail works (I used to be a cop). The bail bondman pays the bail, but you have to pay the bondsman 10-20% for the bail. When you appear for trial, the bondsman gets the money back. So, when you are released on bail, the jail will ask about 20 questions (and take your picture and finger prints). The bail bondsman will ask about fifty questions, in case you don't appear. Why a bondsman will do a favor for a prosecutor (or cop): because the prosecutor or cop will throw a lot of business towards the bondsman. First, I was a small town cop, then a big city cop. In the small town I was actually close to a bondsman. By far, and I mean by far, I had the highest number of arrests in the PD (I was college educated and had been military police for five years before working in the small town). In addition (it's a long story) but the bail bondsman had an ex wife that was pursuing a scorched earth policy against the bondsman, until I came along and the hunter (her) became the hunted. She had vandalized his car a couple of times, set fire to his front door (trying to burn his house down) and had called state regulators a number of times making allegations. I finally caught her and her bond was set at 100K (the other bondsmen refused to take her calls). She ended up getting 10 years, but she was sentenced on my last day at that PD ( I had already lined up a position in the big city PD).
