I specifically requested they watch it subbed for reasons that Vincent states. There do exist some exceptions where I think the dubbing is superior, but this was not one of them.

It really isn’t. People say it’s great because they got a deaf actress to play the role of Shoko, that’s great and all, but aside from that there really isn’t much going for it. Also, the ‘I love you’, suki, and ‘moon’, tsuki, bit doesn’t work in any other language than its original Japanese.

English dubs sound awful in animes. They add too much color to the voices and intonations and doesn't sound like real people. It's way too exaggerated.

English dubbed is better in this movie in my opinion.. It's a shame you didn't give it a try. Probably would've gave you more feels. Whatevs

The movie leaves a ton out but it’s an okay adaptation.

Pretty good overall. I watched this once years ago but didn't remember chunks of it. It's not as balanced as some of the other big title acclaimed anime films (in terms of mixing humor, adventure, heart etc.). Maybe a little too meditative all the way through, almost the polar opposite of something like everything everywhere at once or even just your average pixar films. Still an interesting and unique film, though. You can really see the societal pressure that's in the culture. I think "I apologize/I'm sorry" was said upward of 80 times in the movie. It's good that they seemed to be moving past being so hard on themselves towards the end. Seemed like they just needed to not feel alone so the pressure doesn't get to overbearing and mutual understanding is also probably a big comfort.

This movie gets me everytime. As someone who struggles with social anxiety, the final scene really resonates with me as I try and come out of my comfort zones. That's how I like to interperate it and makes me tear up watching the all the blue crosses fall off at the end.

Great pick. 👍

So like most anime, this movie is based on a manga. The movie does a solid job of hitting all the important beats, but it did leave a lot on the cutting room floor. It dropped an entire subplot where everyone was getting together to make a movie. So when Sho was in a coma, the thing she wanted to fix was to finish making the movie. There was one scene I completely disagree on them cutting out which was the grandma leaving a goodbye letter to the little sister which was honestly very touching and was meant to help bridge the gap between the little sister and the mom. Also the manga does go on like another 10 chapters where this movie ends and even though it still doesn't explicitly state that they end up together, its pretty clear they will be because they both decide to become hairstylists. Sho so that he can take over his mom's business and Shoko because as it turns out, she went to Sho's mom's salon to get her haircut before she transferred to Sho's school and she remembers how excited she was and wants to do that for others. So its my head canon that they will end up together and work in Sho's mom's salon. Really happy Mrs. Movies got drawn in with the apartment jumping scene. That was a real nail biter for me. Also that hand sign at the bridge after Sho wakes up from the coma is a combination of "Friend" and "Promise" meaning a promise to be friends forever. Glad you two liked it, darn I didn't get Mrs. Movies to cry, but at least you two enjoyed it. Not sure it changes her opinion on the genre at all, but it doesn't feel like a loss to me.
