Gaius refused to sign the execution order until his internal Six told him to do it. If he didn't sign and was killed, the Cylons that would keep killing until someone signed. He will be seen as a traitor, but I also like to think of him sparing others death or the agony of the act. Yes, he lives by self-interest, but you can see how tormented he is. What if Roslin was the Pres?
