2. The stuntman that jumped from cable car to cable car broke three teeth (ouch!!). 3. They have cable cars like that in Albuquerque that go from the valley floor (5,000 feet) to the top of the mountain (10,000 feet). 4. Richard Burton was in a harness that was attached to a crane during the climb up the castle wall. Clint Eastwood made the climb without that. When he says "a little help", that was unscripted and an actual request for assistance. 5. The plot. During World War 2 there was an actor that looked just like British Field Marshal Montgomery. During the six months leading up to D-Day, the British dressed up the double and very noticeably moved him around the Mediterranean to confuse the Germans, thus the plot for he movie. Also, "General Carnaby" had a briefcase with him loaded up with false plans for D-Day that was "accidentally" left behind to make the rescue look more legit and cover the trail of the spy mission.
