Correct across the board. And considering the current climate, and the amount of people out there that are likely just "one bad day" away from a break like this, it's thankfully pretty amazing it doesn't happen more often than it does. It's a dark and tragic topic, but a very real one, and this film captured it extraordinarily well.

To me, this movie is a sad commentary on what happened to a lot of our Vietnam veterans. There's a lot of subtext in this movie. William Foster had a Purple Heart, so he was most likely on the front line in Vietnam when he was injured. And the ending of this movie paralleled the Vietnam war, because our veterans sacrificed so much, and then returned to a country that treated them like villains. And when Foster realizes that he is once again the villain, he says "How'd that happen? I did everything they told me to." Unfortunately, it's not uncommon for our veterans to feel betrayed, abandoned and obsolete in today's America. And today's America is unrecognizable to Americans from previous generations, and things have only gotten worse since this movie was made. Crime and degeneracy are rampant, and American / Family values are all but dead. Just look at the people who Foster runs into throughout the day. Had he met one kind soul, things might have turned out differently. But instead he came across gangbangers, white supremacists, scammers, snooty elitists, and generally selfish and uncaring pricks. And Foster, who was desperate for respect, learned very quickly that violence / the threat of violence was basically the only way to get these people to treat him with respect. And that power was cathartic for him, which is why he went on his rampage. The system screws everyone and brings people to their breaking points every single day, but veterans are far more likely to reach their breaking points due to the trauma that they've suffered. And with the countless homeless veterans that we have in this country, it's clear that our government really dropped the ball when it came to taking care of our financially-challenged and mentally-ill veterans.
