Alvar Hanso funded the darma Initiive. He's the descendant of Magnar Hanso who is the captain of the Black Pearl. Charles Widmore bought the log book of the 1st mate of the Black Rock at an auciton, the only artifiact of the Black Rock ever found. It was being auctioned by the Hanso estate. It implies that the log is how the Darma Initiive found the Island and why Charles Widmore bought the book.
