Agreed.... It's one of my favorite genres of film. There are so many angles to explore with horror. Also why I'm such an A24 fanatic. Some of the best indie horror in the last 15 years has come out of or been distributed by that company. Not to mention some of the amazing dramas and fantasy films. And yes, Horror, unlike many other genres is very cathartic.

Thanks for sharing that amusing story :D There are many reasons why Horror is the best genre in any storytelling format; and much like, say, going on the biggest rollercoaster (or whatever, my analogy game is kinda lame), the shared experience always brings people closer together. The adrenaline in the build up, the nervous laughter, all of it. And then, finally, you remember “Oh yeah this was supposed to be fun – and it is!” This film does deal with very brutal subject matter on the surface level, (and yes the practical effects are pretty incredible for the year this was made, absolutely). But at the end of the day, Horror is all about screaming your anxieties & deepest fears into oblivion – where laughter and that huge feeling of relief is on the other side. It just never gets old. Cheers.

Also, just wanted to say after finishing the full watch along, Mrs. Movies is a trooper.... This is a rough one as far as disturbing imagery and subject matter goes. But once you get past that there is quite a bit to appreciate regarding the practical effects. An amusing anecdote.... I got revenge on my father with this film. He took me to see John Carpenters The Thing back in 82 when I was 11 years old. Scared the absolute shit out of me but was also my true introduction into horror films and is still to this day one of my favorites. To be fair, he didn't know any better and was thinking it would be like the version he saw when he was a kid in 51. Needless to say, much like your wife, he was quite traumatized as we got up to leave the theater after seeing this one. Revenge is sweet.... Even if it does have to take 30 years to get it. :)

Finally we arrive at the Evil Dead film that I’ve been waiting for the most. (I love Sam Raimi’s OG trilogy, don’t get me wrong!) But this is that RARE instance of a modern Horror re-make (or a “soft re-boot”) that *actually delivers the goods.* Huge shoutouts to: – FEDE ALVAREZ, for being ambitious & confident enough to make this film. I’d bet 99% of other young & talented filmmakers at the time wanted nothing to do w/ this project, (for fear of not pull it it off). Thankfully Raimi trusted Fede Alvarez & co., and viola. We have our incredibly worthy modern take on “Evil Dead.” – Roque Baños, for composing the music to this film like a madman. This original score is a genuine work of art for anyone who knows a thing or three about music composition & sound design. – [and last but not least] Jane Levy(!), for bringing her A-game & LETTING THE DIRECTOR BURY HER ALIVE *FOR REAL* JUST SO HER CO-STAR OF THE MOVIE COULD MENTALLY GET TO A PLACE WHERE THEY HAD TO CONVINCINGLY PORTRAY A PERSON WHO HAS LOST A LOVED ONE. (Yes, I am kinda riffing on Joe Bob Briggs’ style of introducing a flick. FOUR STARS! “Joe Bob says…check it out!” Haha)
