It's been quite a few years since I saw the original Wayne True Grit. I remember thinking it was fine, but that this was better. However, now that I've finished the original Charles Portis book -- just yesterday, in fact -- I am more certain than ever that the Coens' adaptation is superior, as it really captures the same sense of dry humor and wit that makes the book so great. Like both of you, my memory of the Wayne has faded but I remember it being a more straightforward adventure-type Western -- more about thrills than humor. At the same time, I think this one also has greater thrills, plus an incredible introductory performance by Hailee Steinfeld. I definitely don't think that the Wayne one retained as much of the spirit of the Mattie Ross character from the book, which is what makes the novel and this movie so great, and Steinfeld deserved all of the accolades she received for the performance. Glad Ms. Movies enjoyed it.
