2022-04-28 15:24:53 +0000 UTCMy grandfather was 16 and lied about his age to join the Army Air Corps. He was just a kid from northwest Louisiana but suddenly found himself in Hawaii as an aircraft mechanic. He was at Hickam Field the morning Pearl Harbor was attacked. He never talked about specifics but just said it was a terrible day. When I told him I was joining the Air Force he was angry and scared, said it was no place for a woman. It took him a little while but he came around, told me he was proud of me. He talked with me about his experiences in the military that no one else in the family heard about. He passed in 2008 and I was proud to present the flag to my grandmother on behalf of a grateful nation. Still miss him like hell.
