I think a large part of it is that David Chase (creator) began with an idea that most episodes would be self-contained, like mini movies. From the 2nd season, that changed quite a bit to more substantial storylines that spanned multiple episodes/seasons. I love all episodes of this show once we hit episodes 12 and 13 of this first season.
