As a student of psychology, try to imagine the power a psychologist (one as particularly gifted as Hannibal Lecter) manipulating someone's mind that is under the influence of very strong drugs (esp. hallucinogens), and you'll have some idea what he is capable of... Remember how he killed Miggs in Silence of the lambs? He simply talked to him all afternoon manipulating Miggs into swallowing his own tongue. As I am not a student of psychology, I don't know if that is even possible, but it certainly makes for good fiction. Incidentally, the name of the Opera in the movie is "Vide Cor Meum" Also, before watching the series, I would recommend watching "Hannibal Rising" to get Hannibal's back story as a child. It will give some good insights to his psychology and motivations and will allow the series to make more sense.

I find it hard to compare this movie to Silence because thematically they’re both so different. I think Silence is a more well rounded movie but I love the exploration of the Clarice/Hannibal relationship in Hannibal. You should also consider checking out Hannibal Rising, it’s made by the same people who made these movies but it encompasses Hannibal’s early life and how he became who he is.
