I don't think Owen only realized his feelings after losing Hannah, as you suggest. I think he knew he was in love with her already for most of the scenes we saw, especially in the period after Dani arrived (and Hannah died). Remember, at the bonfire, he was inviting her to come to Paris with him. I think he was just reluctant to say something about it earlier because he wasn't sure how she felt about him, until he finally said something at the bonfire. As with "The Haunting of Hill House" this show greatly rewards a second watching.
