What is their purpose? What is OUR purpose? Why do we exist? They are simply the civilization that surpassed us and are continuing to exist, compelled by whatever same unknowable drive compels us to continue to exist. The Matrix is just a tool they have to keep the humans alive and under control so that they can serve as batteries to power the machine civilization of their own beyond that. The machines believe in their creator, too: us. They know we made them, they don't have any doubt about that. But, unlike most (all?) human religions, they recognize that their creators were fallible and decided that they didn't need us to be part of their civilization anymore, and thus have relegated us to just being a power source.
