EARLY ACCESS: Blue Velvet (1986) | Movie Reaction

Blue Velvet is David Lynch's best movie. It actually has a coherent ending. Eraserhead, Mulholland Drive, Inland Empire, the new Twin Peaks leave you as "that's it, that's the ending?"

If you watch more Lynch, the one thing you REALLY have to remember is that the majority of his films are surrealist films (and that word isn't just a synonym for 'weird,' it means based on dreams and/or using dream logic). A lot of enjoyment of his work is blocked by people trying to make naturalist sense of it, when you're really supposed to think of it like those weird dreams we all have and intuit something from it. For instance, the father clearly had something like a stroke or heart attack (the water hose getting caught was symbolic of a vessel doing the same), but Lynch avoids specificity of things like that (as well as the drug Frank uses and the time period). Again, it feels more like a dream the less you get caught up in that stuff. Eraserhead, his first film, is a good frame of reference for everything else he does, but it can be a difficult film (it's in the deepest end of surrealism as you can get).

Lynch's best movie is Mulholland Drive. I would love if you watched that, and I'd love to discuss interpretations of that movie.

The only David Lynch movie I really actually enjoyed was Wild at Heart. It was a perfect film to showcase a very disturbing Willem Dafoe, as well as the ever strange Nic Cage. Blue Velvet was just a bit too out there for my taste, but kudos to Steve for the bold pick.!

Isn't that his first movie. I've heard good things about it, both of us have never seen it though.

I love Surreal. The Mrs actually enjoyed the film the second time she watched it while I was editing our reaction. Surreal movies kind of take a second watch to really appreciate all the quirky little details and she was definitely laughing more at the goofy little things watching me edit. Surreal just throws her through a loop the first time watching because she's always trying to figure things out and sometimes you just can't haha.

Also his mastery of music, is amazing. This story of a boy who is dragged to the dark side of things because he doesn’t know how to leave well enough alone and until he learns that lesson there is no light. Such a good story to think on.

Alright guys, great reaction. I hope you weren’t put off by the film too much. David Lynch’s Blue Velvet is a good film to me because it displays the darkest of darknesses, but has a fundamentally optimistic message. Frank is such a disturbing villain and there are some genuinely haunting images that only a skilled filmmaker can produce. I’m glad you got through this and hopefully you won’t think I’m too strange! I’ll try to recommend something a bit less surreal and strange next time!

A fascinating/bizarre David Lynch movie is Eraserhead. One of the best

Dennis Hopper plays one insane bad guy in this film. He always does a good job playing villains especially, such as in Speed, Red Rock West, and Waterworld.
